Can anyone give a reason why SO many foreign carriers fly into JFK rather than EWR, which is more convenient to Manhattan and New Jersey? I mean, you see Aer Lingus, Air Afrique, Ghana Airways, Malev, Varig at JFK. Only Continental, Singapore, Malaysian and Lufthansa come out of EWR. I feel that this is the prestige of flying into New York and not Newark (which really isn't so bad) and also that Kennedy's name is attached to JFK whereas Newark has no name for its airport. EWR has better facilities and a less confusing layout and is also better located.

FlyBoeing: You're forgetting Air France, TAP, Korean, and other internationals at EWR. I don't think it's the prestige of flying into NY, but rather JFK being better suited and designed to handle large numbers of international passengers.

Alitalia has flights out of JFK but have now also started 767 flights nonstop to Milan Malpensa from EWR for the summer in addition to the code share flights to Milan and Rome already in service with Continental.

The three NY area airports Newark,Laguardia,JFK are owned and operated by the Port Authority of NY and NJ.The commisioners of which are appointed by the Governors of NY and NJ.
Newark has seen a huge growth in foreign airlines,many such as SAS and Lufthansa have moved most if not all their flights to Newark.However like I said the Airports are run by commisioners from NY and NJ and the NY side is not happy about the erosion of service at JFK and have thus held up many programs at the Port Authority in order to get assurances that more effort and resources will be put into JFK and that no more airlines will leave for Newark.
It's a agency that has to keep a fine balance between growing Newark and at the same time not to up set NY politicians,who have veto power.
Newark has seen tremendous growth and will still see more foreign carriers,Newark has far more domestic connections.The NY/NJ region is big enough for two large International airports,and thats what the Port Authority offer along with Laguardia for the business travelers.

EWR is newer, that's all. JFK has been around for a LONG time, and has traditionally been a BIG international port. But, EWR is growing very quickly. I often fly out of EWR, and curently, Air France, Continental, Sabena, Lufthansa, United, Northwest/KLM, Alitalia, Mexicana, Air Canada, EVA, Korean, Singapore Airlines, Malaysia, Etheopian Airlines, VASP, TAP, SAS, LOT, El Al, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, and Aer Lingus all fly out of EWR. (I've probably forgetten a few too.)
So, no, I don't think it's a matter of prestige, but more history. SAS used to be all JFK, and now they're all EWR.

I live near EWR and I think people underestimate the number of international flights that come in. When I bike I watch them land ( have almost gotten hit a few times by strying into car lanes). Besides the ones mentioned by AeroAussie I have also seen CSA and Swissair at EWR. It seems like every other aircraft I see is SAS!

AeroAussie- a point of contnention- Newark is actually the oldest of the 3 NYC airports- Mayor F. LaGuardia threw a fit because he landed there once in the 1930's when his ticket said 'New York', and that's when he ordered the construction of the airport that was later named after him- LaGuardia, Kennedy (formerly Idlewild) was built in the late 40's/early 50's...
The reason for the inequality among numbers of Int'l airlines is in my opinion the fact that JFK is a bigger airport and therefore has more room for airlines than EWR...

I think you have it all wrong... Newark has more flights and more passengers than Kennedy. It is served by so many international airlines it's unbeivable. KLM, TAP, Swissair, Sabena, British Airways, Deutsche Lufthansa, Avianca, Mexicana, Air Jamaica, Air France, Alitalia, Ethiopian Airways, Korean Air, Singapore, Malaysia, SAS, CSA, LOT, VASP, ACES, El Al, Aer Lingus, Virgin Atlantic, EVA and so much more.

Although the new monorail was built to connect the terminals and long-term parking lots, the large windows and high elevation of this neat contrivance offer plane spotters and shutterbugs (not that I would ever admit to being either) excellent opportunities to photograph a wide variety of domestic and foreign airliners.
If you are shopping for furniture at the new IKEA store, check out the cafeteria, with its views of the southern end of the airport (though you would need binoculars or a telephoto lens to get good images).

Yes! That is awesome that EWR's monorail is expanding to NJT (NJ Transit). Now all I have to do is walk down the street and board a train to EWR to get to my friends house. And it'll be a lot cheaper than parking at EWR ($5 all day!) and it would be delay free (depending if you make the train on time, etc.)
And yes, EWR is the oldest NYC area airport and it suffers from Hub Syndrome (Continental).
