727LOVER:
The runway opened in the following order:
1.) 8R/26L, which opened in the early 1950s (replacing the original Candler Field runway layout). The two crosswind runways opened about the same time.
2.)Next to open was today's 9L/27R, which was built in 1964. At the time it was built, it was way out in the country, and nobody could believe ATL built the runway so far from the (then) terminal. It was extended around 1980, when the current terminal opened, and extended again in the early 1990s to its present status as the airport's longest.
3.) 9R/27L followed in 1973.
4.) 8L/26R was the last to open, in 1984. It couldn't be built until a portion of the old 1961 terminal was demolished.
