I was looking for a cheap one-way fare from Rome to London Gatwick at the end of August. I'll be travelling all thougout Europe but have to get back to Gatwick to non-rev back home. I can grab a ZED fare on someone like British Airways, but I'd like to get a confirmed seat if possible. I'm not that familiar with the many British LCC's that are out there, so if anyone can give me any insight, it would be very appreciated!

Another alternative is to book a return fare and only use the outbound portion.
I read somewhere that this is illegal (or at least against the rules) in the US ,but its perfectly OK in europe. I did this for a friend who wanted to fly BA MAN - PISA it was £500+ single or £99 return without any problems. I know its allowed because I was with a friend in the BA office in Manchester trying to sort out alterations to his flight. In the end the BA staff suggested buying a return ticket and only using the outbound portion so thats what he did.
Don't try to keep up with the Joneses - bring them down to your level !

In my experience, finding a low one-way fare with a full-frills carrier has not been so difficult. I had to fly ORD-MEX in July 2003 and was able to find a one-way ticket with AM for less than U.S.$290 all taxes and charges included. I guess I found this because I kept checking AM's website every few days in the Fare-Savers section and because AM was offering quite low fares to ORD and back because of AA, UA and MX's intense competition. Almost one year later, in June 2004, I had to fly LON-BRU and I found an incredible GBP35 fare (again, all taxes and charges included) in SN's website flying out of LHR. I guess this time I had luck because I booked a lot of time in advance and because I chose the Sunday 6:50 A.M. flight.
On the other hand, LCC's do not price their tickets based on round-trips, so if you look for one-way LCC fares in advance, you can find extremely attractive fares.
