Does anyone have any info. at all about when/why Planet Airways out of MCO went out of business? All of their numbers have been disconnected and they have engineless 727's sitting on the ramp. Any info. would be cool. Thanks.

An FAA inspector once told me the only domestic airline he would never fly was Planet Airways, due to mechanical issues. Don't know if they were that shoddy with their maintenance or not, but maybe their "reputation" finally caught up with them?

I really liked their paintscheme, however...

I understand they had a lot of issues.

I remember back in 1999 when Suntrips terminated their contract with Planet Airways when they stranded two planeloads of pax in Mexico on route to Oakland. Evidently the plane went tech, but this was never communicated to Suntrips or to pax. Suntrips had to wind up chartering other aircraft and returned the pax a couple of days later. Planet Airwyas never really provided sufficiant explanations as to why this occured.

There was a media flurry because parents of a high school group who's kids were stranded prganized a protest.

Talk about a fly-by-night carrier. That was one shoddy operation.

I was going to make a thread asking the same thing but I forgot to.

There hasn't been any news anywhere though, not on here, or Just Planes which usually reports when an airline has ceased ops.

When was the last time they flew? I saw one of their 727s landing a MCO sometime in 2004.

Yeah, they always looked like a scumbag airline to me. Maybe it was their pilots with untucked shirts or that bad paint scheme.

Last saw a Planet 7-2 at the Mercury Air FBO @ ATL, unloading a plane-ful of pax enroute to the Federal Pen. in ATL. A lovely group they were.  eyebrow

Fairly recently, March of this year, they had 2 727s flying a rather large spring break group BWI-CUN. I remember walking around Pier E hearing some of the crowd complain as, no shock here, the flights were running at least an hour late.

Anybody who wants to find that listing can see it under their "Defunct Carriers" screen at justplanes (scroll down in the left frame for the link).

I wonder who picked up their Federal Prisoner business...

Many use to say that about a particular carrier that was once called ValueJet. Look at them now....Airtran! Just proves that a carrier that has a shoddy reputation can turn themselves around.

Do you mean ValuJet? ValuJet was a crappy airline, but not fly-by-night.
