So as I'm wishing I was still in cool, crisp Switzerland like I was a few weeks ago and not in baking Los Angeles I've been looking at tons of pictures of Swiss Air Lines and on their aircraft where it says SWISS/Schweiz/Suisse/Svizzera/Svizra I can't figure out what language "Svizra" is? The Swiss website only offers up English, German, French and Italian so what is this Svizra? I'm pretty sure it's not Spanish or Dutch...

thanks

here's to missing lugano and zurich

That is Romansch, one of the four official languages of Switzerland. I believe it is an old Latin or Romance language. It is spoken in at least one of the cantons, the one whose seat is the city of Chur.

Thank you, Mcbee85. I am impressed to see that there are also other than Swiss people around to answer this not very ordinary question. Congratulations, and thanks for your interest in our country.

Just got back from a few days in Luzern- sheer heaven!

I remember seeing on the Swiss website depictions of aircraft where the dominant title was in another language. Were any aircraft painted in that scheme? If not, that is a shame, as it would make spotting more fun.

He Cambrian,

unfortunately all planes carry titles in English only (and the adjective, not the country's name). It was planned, in the chaotic days of Swiss' launch to decor the planes with Switzerland's names in German, French, Italian and Romansch, hence the pictures on the website.

Still prefer the Swiss cross to the German crane, though,

cheers

Our battered suitcases were piled on the sidewalk again; we had longer ways to go. But no matter, the road is life.

Congrats! You are really knowing much about Switzerland. Rumantsch is an old Latin language which is only still spoken by about 50'000 people (or even less?) in the Canton (state) of Grison (Graubünden). As you said the capital is Chur but in the city itself Rumantsch is not spoken but only in a few valleys of this Canton. Interestingly this Canton has three languages: German, Italian and Rumantsch (with a population of about 186,000 people). Actually all Rumantsch speaking people are bilingual and also speak (Swiss)german. It is really difficult to preserve this interesting language. There are a lot of efforts to do it. That is also why it is an official Swiss language next to German, French and Italian.

Quite agree! I really hope that LX manages to remain a separate entity within LH and even expand.

I think that the way that Swiss has managed its UK flights is almost criminal. They lost LHR-GVA to a code share with BA (which is much worse) and also LHR-BSL. On top of that, their deal with BA barred them from bringing widebodies in on their morning flight from ZRH to kill off connecting passengers.
So now they are reduced to one route (ZRH) from a major airport like Heathrow.

I hear that the BA codeshare on the LHR-GVA route will end soon (please God!). Any chance of seeing A330's back at Heathrow?

Flew LHR-ZRH-LHR in Swiss Business last week, with my mother who is in a wheelchair, and the service was fantastic throughout, and they were so kind to my mother.

Swiss really stands head and shoulders above other European carriers, despite some management problems that they are still having. I hope that they survive and grow, because they deserve it!

the "partner switch" will take place in the coming months and since LX is now off course tied up with LH it will be unlikely that A330's will operate the LHR legs...And we need the 30's on other routes...But off course BD will be the "new partner" at LHR!

as a personal question, what did you get for dinner/lunch?

On the outward flight(LX333) I had one of my quickest flight times ever to ZRH- 1.10 on a very direct routing.

In that short time we had:

Pre-flight champagne/juice
Cold tagliatelle with chicken
Cheese plate
Movenpick Ice Cream
Coffee
Chocolates

Simply amazing service all the way. On the way back we had fish and potato salad.

I had checked in my mother's wheelchair at the gate at LHR, for collection at the gate in ZRH. My mother was very impressed when the Captain himself retrieved and delivered the chair to her personally on arrival.

Just one of the many reasons why I always choose Swiss in Europe where I can as connecting in ZRH or GVA is also very easy.

Don't think so. They need them desperately on long-haul. At the moment they don't have enough long-haul aircrafts with the 9 332 and 9 343. That is why LH is considering to add two more long-haul planes.

Yes, I was chatting with some of the crew about that last week. They were all overjoyed at the LH takeover and forecast good things ahead. They have been promised an extra 2 A340's, provided that their finances continue to improve- new long haul aircraft for Swiss are by no means guaranteed, it seems.

The Maitre de Cabine was telling me that refurbishing the A330's is now a priority alongside acquiring more planes to go daily on their key long haul destinations.

I went out on the new A320- it is fantastic in Business class. The A321 on the way home did look rather dated in comparison.

Are they going to roll the new cabin out on all of their A32X fleet?

The A321's are still Swissair interiors, and right now there are no plans for the refurbishment on them yet...

Indeed the A332's interiors are priority, the comparison between the A343 is simply to big...

thanks for the Catering information, it is part of my job!

A pleasure! The food was good and very nicely presented. The portions were rather on the small side, however.

I quite often fly GVA or ZRH to Athens, and the hot meals offered in Swiss Business on those sectors are some of the best airline food that I ever had!
