Austrian TV reports that a GA plane has crashed today at 20:45 loc near the Reichstag (Parliament) in Berlin, Germany. Pilot was killed, looks like suicide.

I will try to get more information.

I heard the same in the radio news about an hour ago. They said that the plane (apparently an ultra-light plane) crashed between Bundeskanzleramt and Reichstag.

As far as I could understand from Der Spiegel, it was an Ultralight, "Ultraleichtsegler".

Sad to know the pilot died.

Some details: the plane crashed about 150 meter from the Reichstag, pilot was killed. According to local police, identity and motives of the pilot are unknown.
German air traffic control suggests suicide as the motive. The UL crashed in the middle of the meadow and burnt completely. The plane departed in Straußheim and had no contact to German ATC. Pilot handed his car keys and papers over to his son before departing.

There's not a lot of room between them if my knowledge of Berlin geography holds. Must have been pretty close.

There may be room, but what I remember these are public open spaces, so members of the public may have been in danger.

Seems that it was suicide : The pilot´s wife have been missing for a few days and investigations have turned him into the major suspect.

AFAIK, the minimum altitude over Berlin is 2000 ft AGL anyway.

Apparently the pilot took his 14 year old son with him on a flight just before his deadly crash in Berlin. The son left the plane at Straussberg while the father continued to Berlin. It is still just a rumour that his wife had become victim of a crime before. Sad story  Sad

This is what is left of the plane:
