I flew Air Pacific on 744 and the entire upper deck was economy. I have flown 744 on UL 2x trans-pac and it was first or business. I guess the question is what other carries have the upper deck with coach seats.

I've flown economy on the upper deck of JAL 744s both internationally and on Japanese domestic flights. I'm a big fan of upper deck economy, It somehow feels much more roomy, plus there's luggage storage space along the windows. The smaller cabin often means better inflight service too. (then good service is typical of JAL...)

The new configuration of Air NZ will give room for some Premium Economy seats but having a partition between the Business and the Premium Economy will make it look extremely small.

Quoting Justplanecrazy (Reply 2): exactly the same impression i got flying cattle class on JAL upper deck.very comfy
Agreed .
I was fortunate enough to fly JAL to asia from JFK on the upper deck on miles from AA . Let me tell you it was a blast . The service , seats/pitch , FA's , food and entertainment were suburb for economy.
Very cozy up there , quiet too ! Best international flight I have ever been on !

BA used to have World Traveller upstairs on an assorted lot of 747's back in late 80's, early 90's.

Even up until the summer of 2001...don't remember how much further than that.

We were supposed to fly BA economy upper deck in 1999 from BOS to LHR on a 742 classic but at the last minute the switched to a 744. I think most airlines only had it on their classics, not 744s...but i don't know.

Swissair had it on their 743s for a while but later reconfigured. I remember sitting in economy on the upper deck on JFK-ZRH in 1988, then in 1995 I sat on the upper deck again on ZRH-JFK but that time it was business class. The only other time I've sat up there in Y class was on JAL, though I know SAA has it as well, as others have mentioned.

I remember BA and AF 742s having them, though in the early 90s I flew a BA 744 (G-BNLN) that had Y-class on top. It was crowded and messy, people on the emergency rows sitting on the floor playing cards, etc.
Varig had them only on their 747-300 Combis, IIRC.
I dont know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everyone

Pre-cradle seat (the seat that came before the flat-bed) I think most of the BA 747's had convertible seats upstairs. They could be 3 x 3 economy seats or 2 x 2 Club (super Club/Elizabethan?) seats depending on the need of a particular flight segment.

I flew on JAL's 744 JA8901 and JA8902. JA8901 has economy seats on the upper deck but JA8902 doesn't . Probably the aircraft is due for a C or D-check soon.

Two summers ago, LY converted two of their 744s to all-economy configuration. They therefore had economy class upstairs. Kinda cool to visit this usually off-limits zone!

some of JALs 743s had coach upstairs, i know one of the ones i flew on did, because i sat up there, ship 8177, absolutely heavenly. the small cabin made you feel like you were on your own private airliner, great views and very little noise, i know RAM's 744 also has coach seats upstairs, again because i flew up there. it made a huge difference as the ride from JFK to Morocco was the bumpiest ride i've ever taken in my life, i can't imagine what the ride was like downstairs, but we definitely felt it upstairs, and i don't think you usually feel turbulence up there the same way you do downstairs. funny, though, my mom didn't like it! she thought the cabin was too cramped and she didn't like the side bins. personally, i liked them, because they seem bigger and its alot more convenient, especially if you're in a window seat.
I could have elite status if I wanted it, but flying the same airline all the time is boring.

I flew G-AWNA summer 1995, SEA to LHR, seated top deck. First time up there during flight, and must say that the takeoff roll was very gentle, none of that usual "rattle" that you feel and hear when downstairs and near main gear...
Same bird had brought me back from MIA to LHR in 1986, didn't know that top deck can be so comfy...

32 HKGKaiTak: Their 743s did too. A lot of people enjoyed going upstairs in Y and was much talked about.
33 ZK-NBT: QF in the latter days anyway had Y upstairs on the 74L and 742.
