Well Delta serves MAA so it's easier there to get customer service, ground handling and fuel support...it was probably planned as the destination alternate prior to the departure...I would say diverting to an off-line airport is probably done as absolute last resort especially in a foreign country. Just because there was an airport close by does not necessary mean it's the best place to go from the operational standpoint.

The AI flight from DEL to YYZ has been delayed indefinetly as DEL didn't have the a/c to fly, which was stuck up at BOM. What happened to the one that flew previously from YYZ (on Sunday)?

Its around 10pm and i just got electricity in my locality, which was gone from 430pm yesterday over 30 hrs without electricity, which was just pathetic.
My dad walked around 15kms through the water and reached the domestic airport where he slept for 3 hrs and continuoed his journey and reached home at 10am after leaving office which is 22 kms from our house at 6pm.
Me and mom were simialarly trapped and it took us 9hrs to cover a distance 7km to reach my house.
I just looked at NDTV and they are showing aerial pics of BOM airport and cargo vehicles are covered and the tires of all 320s and 73Gs looked entirely submerged.
This has been the worst rainfall at Mumbai in the last 100 yrs.

On AI flights information that flight went on from DEL to BOM and AI187 was supposed to start BOM according to AI website schedules. Don’t know what is happening with AI at the moment as the website seems to be down.
My guess is AI had to position the 777 for maintenance. I was looking forward to that flight as it would have nearly been the routing of when AI used to fly to BHX in the 80s routing BOM-DEL-ATQ- Moscow -BHX. Anyway I wonder if its crew that has delayed the flight as there should be 777 with coming from Dhaka which should operated AI150 to CCU.

In general, day to day operations, what is the normally used runway there? I note from one of the charts that there is a runway - 32/14 - which doesn't have a parallel taxiway. Is that regularly used?

Quoting Karan69 (Reply 18): BTW, heard that the first flights just landed at BOM, any news on that.???
Localizer for 09 was available for sometime around 9 pm. But it shut off again and there is no activity at the airport.
Not sure which act. landed (if any).
NDTV has falsely reported that airport is operational.

Situation is easing up...water is receding. Electricity has been restored in 90% area of Mumbai. Im not sure about cell phone networks, most of them still appear to be jammed while landlines are completely out in many parts of the city. No rains since the evening of 27th uptil now
One VLC just landed at 27. Commercial airlines will only operate from 10 am on 28th.

AFAIK, andheri west got electricity about 20 mins ago but then again my friend who lives there told me that all buildings in his area do not have it fully restored as yet.
Mobile networks have just begun to come back online---i suggest giving them a try now,

Nice to hear things starting to come back. Maybe AI will then be able to get their website up. Lets hope commercial airlines will operate from 10 am on 28th. I know the weather forecast on http://uk.weather.com/index.html is for more rain one hopes this does not cause many problems for aircraft.
Also according to the BHX website AI187A is scheduled for a 13.10 arrival.

Quoting Vivek0072 (Reply 4): Forget rains, that airport should be closed forever, it sucks.
Sorry for my nasty remark, I did not know that the situation is really bad and it has beaten the Cherrapunji record. My sister told that a lot of rail + roads to Maharashtra, Karnataka and Goa have been blocked.
Is the situation improving or is it still bad ?My condolences to all those lost their near and dear ones.
