Main line is now south of US12 with the strongest cores staying south of DTW from here on out (unless something changes). Strongest core near the airport is just by Milan moving ESE...with maybe some small hail stones with it. Most of the convection is focused over Lenawee, Hillsdale counties in MI and Williams in OH. The are going to make a bee-line for TOL, which is why they didn't get many diversions from there - unless the runway construction is still going on.

Another to add:
NW 5894 (Pinn) - MDT - CRJ to DAY

"Due to WEATHER/TSTMS, departure traffic destined to Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, Detroit, MI (DTW) will not be allowed to depart until at or after 3:30 pm EDT. "

If it holds out that long... the delays will build!

NW 67 - AMS - A330 to GRR

So are the pax trapped on the plane on the plane in GRR or do they have the customs/immigration facilities?

There is maybe one small, weak cell that will move over DTW here in the next 10 minutes. Its only up to 47 dbz and VIL is absent...so nothing to worry about. Everything else is south now. Looking at Flight Explorer...most of the back log is gone and things are flowing.

Typically with any Int'l diversions, the passengers are kept on the planes. This is how NW does it in TOL.

Some pics from previous NW diversions to TOL...

MEX Diversion

Parked on the BAX Global ramp...believe the 744 was from NRT, D10 from FRA, can't remember the DC9's origin.

Looks like CLE might not have been the best choice for an alternate. Now we've got a ground stop with level 3 and 4 thunderstorms still building around the area. Evidently there were 85 kt. winds reported at BKL and several light aircraft were damaged or flipped over.

ORD, MDW, & MKE are getting rocked today too. Not a good day in the Great Lakes region. At least once this front goes through things will cool off and the atmosphere will be a little more stable.

In the picture what is the 4 engine plane on the left? BAX Global? Or some other divert?

That's an ATI DC8-63, owned by BAX Global.

That plane is still flying. I saw it last week playing softball. It's the only ATI DC8 with the old turbojet engines on them. It was definitely a site to see flying with all trail behind it =)

"Trapped" in the plane. We have limited customs / immigration capabilities here in GRR. Hundreds of people would take longer to process than the time spent on the ramp waiting for the wx to clear and the refuelers to add Jet A to the a/c..

BTW, I watched NWA 67 take off from GRR yesterday. Nice to see another widebody in GRR. We've some good diversions this summer......

Direct KNOBS, maintain 2700' until established on the localizer, cleared ILS runway 26 left approach.

Is the runway construction done yet? If not...thats why. If it is...they probably still think it is torn up.  Smile
