Given the fact that the 777 Prototype is now in revenue service with Cathay Pacific, and the 717 program is now over, would it not make sense for Boeing to outfit the aircraft and make a deal with Air Tran to take the Prototype? Let us hope that it does not end up like the MD-90 Prototype which is derelict in Kingman. this is nearly as great a travesty as the scrapping the 3 (only two years of use) Air Aruba MD-90's.

It is in service. Boeing flew it on a world tour in our colors, and when the tour was done it entered service.

Thanks so much as I had not realized that. What is its registration number? The latest Boeing Production List did not show it over to your company as yet so thanks again.

The prototype Boeing 717 (MD-95) N717XA (55000/5001) was never delivered to an airline. The aircraft resides in Bldg. 84 at Long Beach (LGB) and will soon be parted out completely.

This is what I feared. Why now is Boeing and Douglas before them so stupid?

I'm sorry, I missed the part when you showed your qualifications to issue such a profound statement? A business does something you disagree with and they are stupid?  sarcastic

WOW parted out. Did the prototype have alot of hours? I realize they needed to test the plane and take it around to show off for the carriers however I am curious how many hours does it need to go through. Too bad it will be dismantled, I would have assumed that it would have entered service however the information here on a.net states differently.

Not all of the prototype airframes for a new design have all of the internal elements needed to retrofit the a/c into a delivery a/c.

Sure the proto had lots of hours, hard hours as it was a test airframe. The aircraft was parked in Bldg 84 a few years ago and was used for interior mod and fixture projects.

I will be shooting photos of the aircraft in its current condition for a book I am co-writing on the 717.
