Cape Verde Airlines announced that it will increase flights to FOR, Brazil from once weekly to twice weekly effective 28 October 2005 with the B757 (210 seats in two classes).

The flight to FOR will depart from the new airport in Cape Verde, Praia - currently the flight operates from Sal airport.

Cape Verde Airlines will be privatised in the course of the year.

Do you mean TACV Cabo Verde Airlines (VR) or do the islands have another carrier, called Cape Verde Airlines?

Yes.

No plans as yet. TACV requested 5th freedom rights FOR-GRU but the Brazilian Civil Authority did not grant the rights for this internal domestic leg.

Very interesting flight. Today i'm in FOR due to some biz meetings on monday, and see a huge movement. Does anyone knows the connections available at Cabo Verde Airport ? Its possible to get FOR to Europe thru Cabo Verde ?

And a 2 class 757 with 210 seats would be a high density configuration ?

Almost. Boeing's website puts 1-class B752 @ 228 max pax. So either they have a really nice pitch or a few premium seats.

TACV claims it a 757-200ER. I wasn't sure there was an "ER" version of the 752, unless VR customized it somehow.

I believe RG 757 fleet has 176 seats (20C + 156Y) in 2 classes, that's why i think strange a 210 seats with 2 classes. Small pitch probably plus a few biz seats. Thanks PPVRA.

Actually a B757 isn't needed for a FOR - Cape Verde Islands flight; but for a GRU - Cape Verde yes.. B737 (but not -100/200) is OK for FOR.

sure, but you can´t seat 210 in a 737, even a NG one.
maybe the 737-900X, but I don´t think they have it yet.

But, how the loads are for the flight ? I imagine the size of FOR market to such flight (if they have no connections to Europe)

Yes, that is possible indeed. I believe I saw some ads in Fortaleza selling the flight from FOR to LIS via Cape Verde. I think it's some travel agency near Hotel Praiano, at Avenida Beira Mar. With the new airport at Cidade da Praia this is definitely something I am looking forward to. I have no idea how much they will charge for stopovers.

I was at Fortaleza this weekend and at least 2 times during the last 12 months, so i know that FOR has a huge market for int'l flights and in fact, they need more service (specially to the US). Many people nowadays preffers travel to Europe by TP due to the lack of flights to North America which takes at least 7 additional hours to connect at GIG or GRU. Hotel Praiano is a nice place ! I use to stay at a friends house close to Quality Hotel.

US flights are more difficult to fill because US tourists have the Caribbean in their backyard and Europeans are more willing to travel to Brazil on holiday.

Me too.
My dad lives in MCZ, and it has some packed flights weekly from TP.
I wonder how things will be this year, when winter gets to Europe and a very famous destination, Thailand won´t be in sight due to the tragic Tsunami last year. Probably a lot of tourists from the EU will come to Brasil.

Just got the news that TACV is now planning a new flight to Brazil: REC once a week, REC-Praia (new airport)-CDG.

This would link REC to Paris with a stop-over in the new airport of Praia, Cape Verde. Travel time would be less than if pax connect in GRU. Interesting route. This could mean that TACV will have three daily flights to Brazil (2 x FOR and 1 x REC).

Cape Verde's Prime Minister (together with other 17 authorities) was in REC to negotiate more details of the new flight.

They seem to follow Air Portugal steps when it comes to serve destinations in northern Brazil.. Where would they fly next? SSA, BEL ?

I would suspect that all the BXO - Brazil traffic goes via SID and/or Praia Airports.

I don't know, does TACV flies to BOS, PVD - where a large number of Cape Verde descendants live?

Yes, they fly 2x weekly to BOS. Don't rule out a flight to PVD in the future since that is where the core of the Cape Verdean US population resides. I know I'd like to see a VR 757 here some day!

If it's cheaper to operate @ PVD than BOS and the core of the Cape Verde US population lives around PVD, it makes senese for TACV to fly there instead of BOS.
Another thing, It may be less time for northern Brazilians to fly to the BOS area (PVD) via Cape Verde than via GIG/GRU !

It's definately cheaper and a much easier process for the passengers to use PVD. I've heard that TACV has been made well aware of those benefits...
