Honda Motor Co., conducted the first public test flight of its experimental small jet plane as the company considers whether to enter the aircraft business.

Honda began tests of the plane, which carries as many as six people, in December 2003. The HondaJet cruises 10 percent faster, has a cabin that is 30 percent larger and has a range that is about 40 percent greater on 14 percent less thrust than Textron Inc.'s Cessna CJI+.

The plane can cruise at 420 knots at 30,000 feet, and can fly as high as 41,000 feet. The jet has aluminum wings, a fuselage made of composite plastics, and two Honda HF118 turbofan jet engines, mounted above its wings.

The automaker has no current plan to ask the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration to certify the HondaJet for sale to the public.

Honda in October formed a joint venture with General Electric Co., the world's biggest jet-engine maker, to market the engines used on the HondaJet.

what's so special about this plane? Is it because it is first from Honda, that is Japanese entry into the market or some technical innovation?

Where do they put the pull start?

I can't help but wonder if they are trying to build up demmand for it by claiming that they won't US cert. it so the public will think they can't get it.

I should also mention that this isn't the only Japanese designed bizjet out there. The Beechjet is still is production and is the old Mitsubishi Dimond airframe.

Citations have a very big part of the market, same with lears. They have earned their spot in the market and its hard for this little bird to start pushing its way onto Citation flyers.

They don't care about the Citation flyers, it's the KingAir and Baron flyers they're after.

The honda jet is for now only a prototype to test this type of engine mounting and new avionics. So I think everyone can forget the idea of seeing these for sale any time soon.

What's so special about this plane, well this is really the first time its been put on public display and the first flight in front of a public audience

I may be way out of line in asking this, but in the future, would Honda ever consider a widebody a/c to compete directly with Airbus and Boeing?

HUH!?

This by no means states that Honda is in the aerospace industry. The Honda Jet was developed and built under a team of a few people like under 100. They have no interest in joining the airplane building industry.
