Starting today Asiana starts 3x weekly nonstops to Seoul using B747-400 combi aircraft. Yes this is passenger service not cargo....

How many pax do their combis seat? This saves many pax on the east coast the hassle of a double connection in ORD or IAD as well as SFO or NRT if they want to fly to *A and may well siphon off some of the traffic KE gets at ATL.

No, Asiana is in the STAR Alliance, which means this would be in partnership with UA if anything

Bit of topic here; but OZ codeshares with QF on the SYD-ICN route, despite being in Star. Obviously ORD is another kettle of fish, but I thought that you may find this tidbit interesting.

Hopefully, ORD's T5 will stop looking so empty now with OZ. As for CX, do they operate to YVR nonstop? If so, I think HGK-YVR-ORD could be a successful routing if they got the rights for it.

TG codeshares with UA on several flights between LAX and SFO to tie into their current BKK-(KIX)-LAX and eventual nonstop BKK-LAX service. Especially since neither UA nor US provide any useful connections out of JFK for incoming TG pax!

I'm pretty sure it was a 744F. Asiana has been flying cargo into ORD for quite some time.

I find it very odd that the world (well, our world) found out about this new flight from Seoul to Chicago via airliners.net on the day the flight started and not by an Asiana ad campaign. I can't recall hearing about it on Chicago radio or TV or reading about it in any Chicago papers. Was there an ad campaign here at all? How about in Seoul?

Is OZ dropping their 744F service here now that the 744combi is being used?

Most foreign flag carrier do not advertise in the Chicago market. In the case of Asiana I guess that they can depend on Star Alliance feed from UA. The only ones that I can remember in recent years that do or did are BA (TV, Print and Billboards), SQ (Billboards) and VS (Print Ads). I might be missing a couple but there are not many.

This was a well kept secret! I flew ASIANA in November JFK-ICN in C. Is the ORD flight non stop or "direct"? I had a stop in ANC in November. Service could not have been better. Excellent staff. I was on a combi and C Class was upstairs with F in front and Y behind. Although service was tremendous the C class seats were awful! Very small and cramped. The entertainment system was practically non existent. Does anyone know if they have done any upgrading? Again I will say, service was excellent!

i walked into the recheck area of t5 monday. and when i saw the sign for asiana, i thought, who?? then another person told me they are now starting service to ord. its kewl to have another airline here with us! i was told they would be between the are lingus and jal ticket counters!

First, I welcome Tsaord to the ORD faction of airliners.net. It's great to have you on board, and I for one look forward to your insight into a different aspect of the ORD experience. I hope you have some good stories for us in the future (that you can share, of course.)

Second, I'd love to know if OZ is discontinuing their cargo-only service to ORD now that they are doing the Combi. Can anyone comment? It seems with the recent (and ongoing?) pilot strike(?) at OZ that they're short-handed, so maybe no more 744F's???

Third, AirportPlan, thanks for the response. Yeah, you'd think OZ and others would want to market in the press, but I also think that a lot of their O&D passengers may be booking thru travel agents anyway. SQ's ad campaign was pretty good when the first started their service here. But, I guess that didn't really work, now did it?

Thanks Airfinair. SQ's problem at ORD was that they could not offer a non-stop flight to SIN. 21 hour with a stop in AMS is a long flight. Believe me. I did it in 2001 when SQ was still at ORD. If SQ ever decided to do the route non-stop with a 340-500 or a 777LR I think that it could work.

If that were to happen.....ohhh, the spotting potentials! Our best hope for a 777LR at ORD is the AF 777LRF replacing their daily 742F from CDG. SQ or Emirates with an A345 is another possiblility. We'll wait and see.

That is a long haul. So, realistically, if you were to fly to NRT or ISN from ORD, and transfer to SIN, how long are we talking? More or less than 21 hours? Is there a shorter route, time-wise? And is it worth the time and money for an airline to invest in ORD non-stop service to SIN or other southeast-Asian markets? That's a lot of $$$ to start up and hope that the yields are enough to cover costs, let alone profit from it.

I guess what I'm saying is that if it were worth it, numerous airlines would have already done so. Obviously SQ thought they'd test the markets, albeit thru AMS. And they didn't see potential. So could this route work? Or a ORD-SYD non-stop 777LR or A345 for that matter? I'm not so sure. Economically, it makes no sense.

Now, there are markets, like the ICN-ORD route, that have the demand and two airlines can compete on the route. Wise choice by OZ, I think. But there's also the WAW-ORD & KRK-ORD routes and LOT's choice to run 762's/763's completley sold out on every flight day in and day out, and not invest in 777's or larger......but that's another thread altogether.
