Hello everyone.

My wife and I will be making our way into the lovely city of Vancouver for two nights this week.

I knew this would be the perfect place to ask the following question:

Is there a great HOTEL near the airport for spotting, etc?
I remember reading once about a hotel that had a great view of either the ramp, main runway or both.

If anyone has any info about YVR, please reply with any and all comments!

Thanks!!

Andrew

Vancouver Fairmont is right at the airport, and has great views of the terminal and ramp areas in the higher floored rooms IIRC

The fairmont hotel in the airport is spectacular. It is fairly pricey. The Delta hotel would also be good if you have a high floor facing the airport. All depends on your budget.

I guess Fairmont will be a great place for seeing the ground and also landings on 26R. If you want to see heavies (international flights), look during the morning. JL, CI, CX (double daily), AC, MU, SQ (about noon), KE (about noon) all come in during the morning rush hour and depart at around 13:00.

Perhaps taking a scanner might be fun. Leave the frequency on 119.55 (Tower) and I suppose you'll have an interesting morning.

Thanks so much for all the help.
Delta hotel is probably more in our price range for the weekend.

I appreciate all the replies.

Also, where is a good place to spot (other than the hotels).
Is there a good place to see the heavies arrive?

Please advise.

Thanks again everyone!

Hi Anderew!

The northern runway (08L/26R) is usually the one used for arrivals and the southern runway (08R/26L) is usually used for departures and the odd arrival.

Anyway, the best place for spotting (I'm assuming you'll have a car), is if you drive back towards the terminal from your hotel, and just before the big Air Canada Hanger on your right side, turn right at the traffic light ( it should be Templeton Street). Keep following that road and you'll see the runway on your left side and a gravel layway on your right side, that's where we all usually hang out and spot.

If runway 08L is in use, just keep following the same road towards Iona Beach, and once you get to the Ocean, you'll see another layway on the left side which is right by the threshold of RWY 08L.

The Asian Heavies usually arrive in the morning and early afternoon where the Europeans arrive from late morning, all through the afternoon and into the early evening.

Hope this helps and have a great time in Vancouver!
