No-show Pax

How many pax (%) are no-show on each flight? any distinction carrier-wise?

I heard a number of 10 - 20 %! Isn't that a little high?

It really depends on the destination. Florida has a high rate. India has a really high rate sometimes as well.

Most airlines have a computer program that tracks the flights and the no show rates. The program then takes control of how many seats to actually book on the flight. Sometimes in rare ocassions, a flight becomes over booked and someone with flexible plans gets a voucher. (this is a recording)

It depends on the city. LAS has the highest no-show in the US from what I am told.

I was standby on an HP 757 from BOS-LAS once. The plane had 190 seats and was booked to 220, plus 5 standbys, (I was number 5) I was able to get on the flight with 2 seats still open so that meant 27 people or 12.25% didn't show.

Interesting! Thanks for this.. the QR checkin told me on my last flight (where I received a voucher as VDB!) that normally on their flights from FRA-DOH, teh no-who rate is about 20 pax.. but when I flew it were only 3! Holidays probably. which other destinations have high no-show.. and tell me some reasons WHY no-show, except of

-missing a flight (good airlines put you on the next flight)
- having a cheaper return ticket than with a o/w ticket @ desired o/w travel

What are normal sanctions for no-show?

btw, are these occsions really that rare?

Noshows vary from destination and time of the year. Noshow around x-mas is less than for example february.

For the airline I work for the following destinations have a high no-show:
LOS (today a noshow of about 45 pax!)KAN/ABV/ACC/KRT/ADD/DEL/BOM/CAI
/AUH/DXB/DOH/CUR/AUA/SXM/PBM

In Europe, noshows are quite high on OTP/KBP/LED/SVO/LHR/CDG

Destinations with very little noshow: IAH/JNB/CPT/NBO/JRO/DAR/EWR/YUL/OSL
/ARN/HEL/CPH/BKK/SIN

Destinations with almost all pax showing up (only up to 5 noshow pax): NRT/KIX

We've always thought that the reasons why the Mainland China flights can afford to be so overbooked to SFO/ORD (on UA) is due to the fact that many are unable to obtain entry visas between the time they book the flight and the time their flight has come (and gone without them).

I would imagine that to be the case for some of the other cities listed in previous posts.

If you have a fully flexible ticket (paid for) you usually can re-book or cancel w/o any costs.

With most discounted tickets, the problem is more complex (it all depends on the fare-restrictions - btw. one thing everybody should read before booking !):
- if it is a no-show on the first leg, one may be lucky to get some refund or be allowed to re-book for a fee. Most LCC´s just say in their terms: "no-show" = no refund.
- if it is a no-show on a second leg, refunds usually are not possible; only rebooking for a fee should be possible, as long as ticket validity hasn´t expired yet.

Just my knowledge & (learned) experience as a pax.

People going to travel agencies asking for a fare to any destination. The travel agency makes a booking and sometimes even puts in a fake ticket number. The customer never shows up again and the agent forgets about the booking. Unfortunately this happens quite often.

From my experience, flights between Central America and the U.S. are often heavily overbooked due to the high no show factor.

I was unaware of this fact.
I´ve never experienced such a thing; neither on private travel planning nor on business travel planning.
Until now I thought that travel agents only did a reservation of a flight (if allowed by the fare rule) which expires automatically after several days.
So Travel Agents enter a fake booking into the res´system w/o having received any payment for this flight from the wanna-be pax. From my point of view, the res´system should not allow this. Only "auto-expire reservations" or booking with full details of payment should be allowed ...

But then all those personnell trying to calculate the variable figure "how much may I overbook a certain flight" would become unemployed ...

The number of no-shows can vary by destination, route, date, and time. According to a friend who works for AA, some flights will overbook by as little as one seat, and as many as twice the actual seats.

Routes that carry a lot of business flyers have many no-shows, because travel plans change at the last minute, or simply meetings run long, and people get stuck in traffic.

According to my friend, a lot of business flyers going into and out of LAX will double and triple book flights, even in first class. The speculation is that many people in the entertainment industry are the main culprets.
