And Air NZ.... QF are also going to reduce the flight on their own metal which will be replaced by Jetstar services. QF have stated that the total number of seats available will increase from current levels. Hot meals will availalbe on Jetstar services, but will be for sale.

Qantas Group Offers More Choice to New Zealand Latest News

The Qantas Group today announced new trans-Tasman schedules, with low cost airline Jetstar complementing Qantas services to Christchurch and opening up a new route between New Zealand and the Gold Coast.
The Executive General Manager of Qantas, Mr John Borghetti, said the new schedules, effective 1 December 2005, would provide customers with more flights and travel services, as well as around 1,500 extra seats in and out of Christchurch every week.
"Qantas and Jetstar will both operate services between Christchurch and Sydney, with Jetstar offering 10 A320 return services on the route, and Qantas initially operating nine two-class Boeing 767 return flights a week for the peak school holiday season, moving to a daily service from February 2006.
"The two-class Qantas services are timed to offer convenient connections to Qantas domestic and international flights," Mr Borghetti said.
"Jetstar will operate nine return services a week between Melbourne and Christchurch - replacing current daily Boeing 737 services operated by Qantas - and daily services between Brisbane and Christchurch, replacing Qantas' daily Boeing 737 services," he said.
"Qantas will continue to provide the majority of Qantas Group capacity on the Tasman - including the new year-round weekly services between Sydney and Queenstown from 1 October 2005 - but customers now also have the option of a lower cost alternative to the predominantly leisure market of Christchurch," he said.
"The new schedule will enable the Qantas Group to offer the best possible mix of services for business and leisure markets."
The Chief Executive Officer of Jetstar, Mr Alan Joyce, said one of the most exciting aspects of the new schedule was the chance to open a new route between the Gold Coast and Christchurch.
"We will be flying our A320s twice a week offering more than 350 seats each week in each direction and promoting new tourism opportunities for both Australia and New Zealand," he said.
Qantas currently operates more than 200 flights per week between Australia and New Zealand.

I wonder if this will really pay off for Qantas. Cutting QF's MEL-CHC and reducing SYD-CHC to once daily doesn't seem to make sense to me. Perhaps leisure travellers won't find a huge problem with switching to JQ but I wonder what that is going to do to the trans-Tasman corporate market and for international visitors. It might have worked for Hamilton Island or leisure destinations that are a short-hop flight away but not sure trans-Tasman is the same market, even for tourists.
Bear in mind also that EK is flying daily on the SYD-CHC route (as well as NZ).
Why didn't QF adopt the AO model instead? (be interesting to see an AO livery on a 737!)

Hopefully Dunedin airport will eventually get either pacific blue or Jet star services from this ad they have just spent a few million on upgrading their airport, i bet they are hoping as well becauser they only have 2 airlines sj and nz so time will tell..........

Fascinating. I was speaking with a marketing guy for NZ here in Australia, and he said one of NZ's biggest problems was QF's stranglehold on the business market trans-tasman. Could QF's reduction (replaced by Jetstar) be a good thing for NZ? NZ will now have more full-service flights on the CHC routes than QF to SYD, and the only full-service on MEL and BNE routes out of CHC...
