DC-9 And 717

Guys, to the eye the DC-9 and 717 look very similar. However, is there still any way to tell the difference between the two when looking at them from the outside? Thanks.

They do look very alike, but there are a few external marks that seperate them.
1.On the 717, MD-90 and MD-87, the tail extends for about a foot on top of the horizontal stablizer.On DC-9 and MD-80 it barely goes above.
2.The engines(BMWs) on the 717 are much wider than the JT8Ds on the DC-9.

look at the photos above, the BMW engines on the 717 don't have the little protrusions that the DC-9's JT8D's have. Also the 717 has the 'Beaver Tail', while the Dc-9's rear fuselage is rounded.

The Dc-9 has a cone shaped tail while the 717 has a chisel like tail.

Other than the tail differences, note the shape diffs between the JT8Ds and the BMWs. They're similar in shape to the MD-90s IAE engines--shorter and somewhat fatter in contrast to the longer slimmer nacelles of the JT8Ds
