Last year i flew BA 085, LHR-YVR, this route at the time was operated by 747-200's, powered by the reliable RB211. The aircraft is solid and reliable, and I can highly reccommend a cockpit visit as they still have the 3rd seat for an engineer.
I'm not sure which engines power the United airlines 200's, although I hope it is the Rolls.

Last year I flew on United's 747-200 from Los Angeles to Honolulu and it was aweful! I'm sure many people who have flown on UA's 747s would agree that their economy class seats are cramped and uncomfortable. In addition, I found that the air conditioning system was not very effective since it got quite hot in the main cabin. On the way home, I asked to sit in the last row window seat in the main cabin and it was much better since there are only two seats instead of three, you're closer to the lavatories and you can get up and stretch (there's room behind you). The Pratt & Whitney engines were not the quietest I've experienced, but they do the job. In conclusion, if you are sitting in economy on UA's 747-200, try your hardest to get the last row window seat... Lie if you have to (I did... I said I was clausterphobic) and you will feel a little better than the other passengers.

The A/C system would have been working too well if it was hot. The outside air temperature is well below freezing the A/C packs actually warm the air. Next time have the F/A notify the cockpit and they can cool it off pronto.
The Pratts are preferred by many over the RR211's due to reliability reasons. The RB211 may be slightly quieter.

I have flown Lufthansa, KLM and Air Canada 747-200s. LH and KL has GE engines, AC had PWs (Air Canada has retired their 742s). It's a great aircraft but not as modern inside as a 744 for example. Also it's rather loud in the back of the plane.

i personally had flown on UA747-200 & -400s, Qantas and Air France. It was i think a few months ago that i went on B747-200 on Air France from Paris to Princess Juliana Airport. I was not sure wat was the engine manufacturer but i think both UA+AF's 742s r rather good...but the engines are a bit noisy when it was crusing but the cockpit was a bit too classical not like the -400s and there is a seat for the engineer which i sat on it. that time had no engineer as they dun need it with the newer systems. I loved to sit on the upper decks of 747s so i did evreytime.... i dun mine flying with 747-200s
