The FAA has upgraded Trinidad & Tobago to Category One status. This will allow BWIA to expand their US schedules, add more flights, use their A340 to the US, and restore their codeshare agreement with United (if they are interested), among other things. Here is a news article:

Would not surprise me to see them (re)-introduce new routes from their current US gateways, such as Miami-Tobago.

In the US, they fly to Miami, New York City-JFK, and Washington-Dulles.

It's a great notice but I'm very dissapointed.  Sad BWIA only will use it's Boeing 737-800 to fly to MIA, NYC and WAS. Another cities in the USA will fly in a codeshare ith UA.  Smile

Ah, good news at last for T&T. Category 1 - this will allow BW its long-overdue expansion of services to the USA. Let us hope that they work hard to maintain that valued status.

Part of the fun of flying into the Caribbean is having the tiki hut style terminal, air stairs and using the runway as a taxiway.



It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now.

BW has been known to undergo financial difficulties lately, getting Trinidad & Tobago in FAA Cat. 1 is an step in the right direction to improve BW.
BW rely alot on Leisure and VFR traffic, so unless they can come with good feeder traffic from destinations in South America (I don't mean GEO or PBM) the choices and frequencies for new US destinations service will be quite limited.
Maybe we could see BW in BOS (or PVD), ORD, RDU, DTW, CLE, PIT, ATL, MCO, TPA, FLL, IAH; also BW moving from IAD to BWI (if UA codeshare doesn't work and need to spend less on airportfees.).

I said it before, and I will say it again.. in MY opinion.. most Caribbean airlines would do very well if they went south to their cousins in Brazil and bought some E70/75/90/95 for their US flights.. then they could do more feeding without having to rely on filling a bunch of large aircraft.. and save those aircraft for other long-haul or high capacity destinations..

If Air Jamaica, Cayman, BWIA.. got some E75 and flew them to RDU, CLE, TPA, MSY, BNA, etc.. and use E95 for PVD, DTW, MDW, PHX, etc.. they could definitely get some good loads and the majority of those flights could be filled with O&D traffic alone..

but that is just my opinion..

It is not that easy.

Firt of all, Trindiad & Tobago is not a vacation island. Hence, limited US service that is focused on business traffic and VFR demand. Americans don't vacation in the Trinidad.

Secondly, the Cayman Airways are an upsacle, limited appeal resort. Few American visit the Cayman islands, they can't afford it.

Air Jamaica is the only one that could possibly make a go of it...but they are having enough troubles as is. They are even ending Boston service next month.

the ironic thing is, Cat2 was actually protecting BWIA.

Cat1 could infact, work against it.

When we were Cat2, no new airline could have been started to fly from Trinidad to the US.

That's no longer a factor with Cat1, which means BWIA is now open to direct local competition. This can be an opportunity for the Gubment to close it down.

but that's being negative and I don't want to see BWIA go belly up at all.
Let's hope it's international brand value keeps it alive.

Inbound, who would start another airline in T&T to fly to the US? Do remember that Air Caribbean tried to do exactly that and failed miserably - in fact its use of inadequately hushkitted 732's to MIA was one of the reasons T&T was downgraded in the first place.

BW will survive and thrive and will certainly use the A340 to JFK at peak periods to maximise revenue.

BW used to serve both BWI and BOS.

Flights from BWI always did well, dispite flying BWI-BGI-POS on an MD80.

I wonder if BW will start non-stop US to Tobago flights?

Nice new Terminal in POS, close to a deep water port, cruise ship business
could do very well.

True, but, as you said, Americans do not flock to Tobago. It is virtually unknown among American citizens, but loved by Austrians and Brits.

They already fly IAD-TAB, and a weekly MIA-TAB flight is almost definite.
