Martinair - Maersk Acquistion Of P&O Approved

"With reference to the public announcements on 11 May 2005 and 10 June 2005 regarding the public offer by Maersk for all ordinary shares in the capital of Royal P&O Nedlloyd, Maersk and Royal P&O Nedlloyd hereby announce that the European Commission ("EC") and the United States Department of Justice ("DOJ") have cleared the envisaged acquisition of Royal P&O Nedlloyd by Maersk."

With its sale of Maersk Air last month, Maersk only operate airline business with cargo operator Star Air. Now through the acquisition of P&O, Maersk also take over 50% ownership of Martinair (as discussed earlier). On one hand the cargo operations of Star Air and Martinair could go hand in hand. On the other Maersk, with its sale of Maersk Air, does not seem interested in passenger operations and therefore might sell off Martinair in full (to KLM/Air France?) or perhaps sell the "passenger part" and keep the cargo operations. What's your thoughts on this - anyone with 'inside' Martinair/Maersk/P&O knowledge?

This seems to be part of a all service strategy for Maersk.
They are yet to be able to provide, in addition to their shipping world wide air cargo.
So after your goods has been shipped to a port, if you would like it to move on with air cargo Maersk will be able to offer this to a full extent. It might not be under the name "Maersk" but it will be Maersk making the money.

I can't see why Maersk will NOT be one of the worlds strongest air cargo companies in 10-15 years.

It would make perfect sense to keep StarAir + MartinAir

StarAir + cargodivision of MP complement each other. And could be used to create air/sea options for their shipping customers.

The DM brand will disappear with the NB take over and the brand is now a low-cost/low-service brand very unlike the AP-Moller/Maersk Brand in general. So keeping the MP pax brand will be a good choice not creating brandconfusion, and with concentrating on the longhaul charter market there is not so much loco competition - also MP is already known in Denmark for charterflights.
The long hauls scheduled flights - well that is another matter.

So rather that speculating about selling the 50%shares in MP - I would suggest they buy the remaining 5o% - but think about selling the scheduled pax rights.

they can't buy the shares of each other, because P&O wanted to sell the MP part earlier to KLM, but it wast approved.... so neither Maersk or KLM can buy Martinair from the other company..... bit strange but thats the way it goes.

I'm a little confused here. So KLM can not by the MP shares of P&O, that I can understand - monopolies etc. But why would that stop P&O (now Maersk) from buying MP shares of KLM?

KL doesn't want to sell MP as they fear it would become a big competitor for them.
