A340-330 Captain Right-handed...

Ok here's my question...
Since airbuses aircrafts are made without a yoke but with a joystick, and on the captain side the joystick is located left from the seat, isn't that a bit uncomfortable for the captain to manipulate it if he is right-handed? the same goes for the first-officer who have the stick to his right but who is left-handed...
I just thought it would not be very comfortable for them if it was to happen ...which i think is an usual case

I don't think they use the joystick all that much so it shouldn't be too much of a discomfort.

Ok cummon really how much do they use that??? I was in the Jumpseat one time and they did not disconnect the auropilot until about 2 hundred feet, and by then the airplane pretty much lands it self. and the computer takes over almost right after take off, so I don't think that it is a big problme for the pilot to fly th eairplane with his left had for a few mins each flight

Hi folks,

that's exactly the question I asked 2 LH pilots 2 weeks ago when I went to Lisbon abord an A 321-100.
They told me that I takes you about 45 minutes in the simulator until you're used to flying the plane lefthanded eventhough you're righthanded.
Another thing is that you learn flying with the left hand since the throttle is always located on the right hand side in these little planes like a Cessna. So you're already used to it when you start in a big jet.
They also said it's a weird feeling to fly right handed again when you're first officer but the whole thing is not that big of a deal.

I read an article recently about a flight in a A330-220 and found to my amazement that the thing can land itself and guide itself down the runway until the A/T is disengaged !

Bordem and STUPIDITY, what the hell kind of pilot wants to sit behind a desk and work on a computer, thats really all he does.....I am amazed that pilots would alow their airlines to operate an airplane that can override it's commander, they are nothing more then office workers anymore.....

Fly Southwest Airlines. WN doesn't use autothrottle and autobraking, and only recently started using VNAV. They basically want pilots and not flight managers.

I have been to the cockpit of a Swissair A 330-200 and asked the pilots this question. They came both from the B 747 and told me that it is no problem at all to fly with the "joystick", left or right. It is not boring because the aircraft can land automatically if required but with SR the pilots make the landing usually by hand and not by computer if the weather conditions are good enough.

majority of people are natural right-handers, but look at your arcade and playstation joysticks, they are still made to be used with your left-hand. and everyone still pulls off the most difficult Street Fighter/mortal kombat mayhem move without a sweat. i believe flying a 340 won't require any moves more intricate than these.

A sort-of unrelated question.... Why is it that pilots always sit in the left hand seat and co-pilots in the right? Is it just customary? Are there any exceptions to the rule?

Holy crap!!! Pilots on Airbus aircraft can be no more proficient at joystick maneuvering than a 12 year old Sega wiz???? This is the great new technology??!! Reminds me of the trolley systems in some cities...whereas they used to require conductors, now they only need a government employee to sit there and make sure they stop at red lights! Is this how we want life to be at 41000 feet....I guess 35000 feet in Airbus' case...????

The whole point in having the "sidestick" is that it is out of the way, simpler, and i guess you have more space. For the captain, i was told by an A340-300 pilot who works for cathay pacific that the side stick has those advantages, you get a table in front of you to do all the paper work i stress that all pilots do around the same amount of work on a plane. So why are airbus pilots so called "office workers" now when they are in the air, because they do paper work? well oin the 747, you do just as much, so now i can say "boeing pilots are office workers." fair enough isnt it?
I think its better that they have side sticks.
A good idea thought up by airbus.

Just to add another fact to the discussion:

for proficiency reasons, you have to make some autolands even in good weather. Otherwise you will have to divert. So, if you see a landing and thy guys use the autopilot, that has nothing to do with Boeing or Airbus, but with the fact, that they do a proficiency autoland.

BY the way, why should Southwest care about autolands? It has nothing to do with pilots, not managers, but with the fact that 99% of Southwests trips do not go to destinations having fog probability. If WN would operate in Europe, I bet they'd end up doing the same thing as everybody else: autoland proficiency training.

As usual you're talking just shit. I just joined the jumpseat in one of CX's A340s landing in HKG. They perfectly handled the landing with the stick, and they told me they are very satisfied with it. Having flown other types before, they explained it provides much more room in front of them (comfortable), and they wouldn't like to change it out again.

Oh but, nice idea about the 12year olds, so airlines could manage to save money employing them...you should make that suggestion. Maybe they send you a doctor then who you obviously need...

Cwapilot, maybe you should realize that this is an aviation forum, not an idiot place.

you're right. CX's A340s are a pride in the sky. It was a great flight from LHR to HKG. Much room, good seats, PTVs, a very smooth ride, and, very important, only one person next to me (not two...)
Not to forget the perfect landing from the flightdeck.

Udo, im sorry to say that A340's are not used on Cathays LHR to HKG service....they only use 747-400's previously their 747 classic "200" versions, however they do run a manchester-paris-HKG service.....
Maybe they are running the A340's because of "low season" now and they make a better profit with the more economical (depending on passenger load when comparing to the 747,e.g. if the plane is half full the A340 is more economical, etc....)A340's.

Thanks udo,m yes i love their PTV's, i went on a Virgin Atlantic A340-300X, economy class, excelent window- wing seats, and a trip to the cock-pit...I Wasnt allowed to stay in the cockpit for landing because there were trainee pilots on board. But it was a beuatiful landing on a cloudy day!

CX really flies the A340 on the LHR-HKG routing, exactly four times a week during that season, on flight 254/255. My flight home was aboard a B744.

I suppose it was because of the low season. The 747's dont make much in he low season, thats when the A340's com,e in i suppose....i really didnt know they used the A340's on this service....well thats something new....ill check it out myself.
