Its sad that its getting to this point. I know some will blame the mechanics union for this. But choice do they have? If the company is going to keep taking and keep taking from you then you at some point have to draw a line in the sand and say "no further." It comes to a point where you have to say enough is enough. Now you need to determine whether you will ever be able to work for the company again. Are your demands and the demands of the company so incompatible that an agreement will never be reached? NW doesn't want a union and the mechanics want to protect their future. If the company simply doesn't want a union working for them you might as well just walk away. Its not a pretty answer but anything else is just a waste of time for everyone. Let the mechanics move on and pick up work independently.

Honestly, I realize that they are going back to the bargaining table on Monday (IIRC), but I think both NW management and the AMFA pretty much know where this is heading now -- I think everyone pretty much recognizes that a strike is coming.

As somebody who prefers to look at things on a case-by-case basis, I'm with the unions on this one. Northwest's management is negotiating in poor faith, knowing that no union is going to vote to have half of their force lose their jobs. Hopefully, the AMFA won't even waste the ink in their printer putting any proposal including mass outsourcing to a vote, this will end with nobody crossing the picket lines in a sympathy strike, and all of the Northwest Airlines Mechanics land new jobs fairly quickly.

It nearly seems that the Mechanics are trading a 53% reduction in jobs for a 100% reduction.....

Is it true that many current AMFA mechanics at NWA have already received a card inviting them to join the group that will be replacing them if a walkout occurs? If so, I wonder what the conditions were that these particular people were invited OR did all members receive these cards?
If the stories about the invitations are true it would be interesting to see what wages are promised after a walk/lock out is finished. What would keep the group from organizing again? What seniority system will be used?
This might be a pattern that is repeated.

For one moment, put yourself in an AMFA employee's shoes. Would YOU be so magnanamous then and vote for a contract that would put you out of work? Would you REALLY "take one for the team"? Why would you when your leadership is taking pay RAISES and "performance bonuses" while losing record amounts quarter-over-quarter, year-over-year?
You lead by example and if you are going to ask for 53% employee layoffs and 26% pay cuts, then you do it to your own group (management) first and then go to the rank-and-file.
DAMN! This SUCKS! I just had to go to the next higher age bracket in my profile! :-(

What's worse than a bunch of airline employees that are on strike? Having to be a customer served by senior cabin crew (and on international flights, that would be most) whom are so embittered by company politics and mismanagement that they are nothing less than miserable to be around. No genuine smiles, no light hearted gestures, just stone faced by-the-book cabin service workers.
That is just a customer's impression from such a flight between Europe and the US. A lack of morale amongst the ranks is evident, yes, even by the passengers!
I hate to see any group of employees of a large company having to resort to an ultimate demonstration of dissatisfaction of policy by amassing an organized strike. It is sad when there is such a disconnect between management, and the people who keep the wheels of production turning.
Letting this issue go on unchecked, will ultimately reflect on the airline as a whole, just like the paint of the aircraft or the cloth on the seats, the CUSTOMERS will see it and take their business elsewhere-to a more inviting environment.
If all negotiations and all possible avenues explored and all options are lost, then the end of The rope is near. It is a game of chicken between the decision makers, and those ultimately affected. If a strike is the only way to solve these problems, then God's speed to all those involved. I hope all sides get what they deserve.

We are safety professionals first, then service. They both go hand in hand in my eyes, but safety is number 1.
I have flown many European airlines, and I have yet to find that friendly service that so many people say is there. It appears that European Flight Attendants are very cold and indifferent. No warmth. No personality.

I disagree. I think both sides want it, so it will happen. AMFA will walk out, NW will bring in scabs, and the rest will unfold progressively from there.
Should be interesting to see, though, who's scenario plays out: AMFA's painting a doom-and-gloom picture of untrained, inexperienced replacement mechanics not knowing how to handle NW planes, massive delays, massive cancellations, etc. NW is saying that customers won't even notice a difference, and all of the replacement mechanics will just step right into the place of the striking AMFA workers. Wonder which will actually happen?
