Virgin (Whatever) Air, Is It Getting Out Of Hand?

At first, I never flew with any of the Virgin airlines and I don't know how they are, but from what I read here they are pretty good, so don't make this thread to a Virgin bitchfest.

I was just wondering how many more "Virgin airlines" there will be come in the future. Currently we have (correct me if I am wrong):

  • Virgin Atlantic

  • Virgin Express

  • Virgin Nigeria (new)

  • Virgin Blue

  • Pacific Blue (same as Virgin Blue)


  • And I read that Virgin Polynesia will be launched soon.

    What's actually up with Virgin America?

    So how many Virgin airlines are there to come? I wouldn't mind to see a "Virgin Germany"! But somehow is it getting out of hand in my opinion, there are Virgin airlines everywhere and I predict that there is maybe a "Virgin India" and a "Virgin China" coming soon (if the respective governments allow it).

    Opinions, thoughts?

    PS: Virgin Drinks should finally introduce their stuff in Germany, I can't wait to drink their Blue Bubble Gum flavor.

    I think these will fall under Virgin Atlantic. However, if he wants long haul out of Australia/New Zealand to feed his Virgin America, then he may launch Virgin Pacific.

    Not if they operate domestic flights within India and China respectively. Then they have to be a separate company.

    No, actually they can't because they have too few connection flights. For example: The Virgin Group (Virgin Express especially) needs to get connection flights from airports in continental Europe to LHR/LGW, but I think they are not allowed to offer them, otherwise they had do it already. They offer mainly flights from BRU to everywhere but not to one of their VS flights.

    When you try to book a VS flight ex LON with a connecting flight on LH or BA from continental Europe, you get an astronomic fare shown from your booking engine. I even read here on A.net that BA refuses to interline baggage with the sorry excuse that "they can't interline it". For example: When you are flying DUS-LHR on BA and LHR-JFK on VS, you have to pick up your bags in LHR and recheck them in LHR to get them in JFK.

    Seems that the major airlines fear competition from VS, doesn't it?

    In my opinion could the Virgin group be easily a serious competition to all of the well known airline alliances!

    Edit: They may have a bombastic O&D market but they could even attract more pax when they would have connecting flights from all over Europe and Australia on their subsidiaries to their VS hubs (LHR/SYD).

    They are interlining here in Australia now with the conversion of Virgin Blue to the same reservation system....

    Yes it does seem like other fear competition. I agree w/ you that a Virgin group alliance would be a serious contender on the global market. They may have to be one airline to make the connections like you state in continental Europe from their globally spattered hubs. Right now I see Virgin as a bunch of Southwest Airlines with the same owner (I pick WN because of being successful and having an interesting director - not the LCC vs. full service international aspect) scattered around the globe.

    Once Virgin America gets in the skies watchout.

    They should do the same here in Europe, i. e. offer connection flights via Virgin Express but they can't (at least to LHR). I am glad that it works at least in Australia.

    I bet Branson is building up markets of successful entities, and once the latest ones comes in: America, China, India - form Virgin World alliance and do what it takes to connect them and watch out.

    Actually, they have some quite good fares with connections from Germany included (on either BA or LH) loaded into the CRSs, though so far it seems to be only a select few destinations and not everywhere they fly to.

    But I agree - it would be nice if they had a good offering of connections in Europe as well, be it through rival BA or, probably more likely, through part-owner SQ's partner LH, or, maybe even more likely, by finally taking over BD.

    Then again, they seem to be filling their planes quite nicely as it is, so I guess they just don't see a necessity to offer much more than they're doing at the moment...

    Do you not perhaps think they may one day join Star Alliance? I mean, they're 49% owned by SQ, codeshare with them, codeshare with BD, might even buy a stake in BD...
