How Will GIG Expand When Time Comes?

I was looking at a map of GIG, and it presents some interesting challenges when time comes to built a new runway and pax terminals. While I realize these expansions are probably not going to happen in the near future, I find it interesting to analyze.

Where would a third runway be built? There seems to be only enough space for one more in the island, parallel to rwy 10/28 (or even another short one parallel to 15/33 crossing 10/28), but right where it should go there is RG's GIG VEM maintenance facility.

There seems to be enough space for a terminal on that corner where rwy 10/28 passes near the terminals, but that would take the space from where I imagine a third runway would begin/end.

Reclaiming land from the Guanabara bay for a rwy would be an environmentalists nightmare and I doubt it would ever happen.

I'm interest in hearing any inputs,

If it ever happens it will be as usual in Brazil, which means, when the airport is handling twice its capacity, and the properties around became so expensive that would be cheaper to build a new one. Even than there will be a lot of talks, such as: "It´s too far from downtown!", "That airport is fine, bring in bigger planes and there will be no need to build a new runway", and other things like that.
It´s said, but true.

But then, Infraero seems to prioratize GIG, or at least keep it up to date more than other airports (i.e. GRU). But let's try to avoid this endless discussion.

With GIG domestic growing, it will certainly bring in more international flights in the same situation as DL's. Then you sum the expected growth and in 10 years time or so it's about time to think about expanding GIG. PLanning since now would be great, avoid building structures where something more usefull, and maybe even in need, can be put in place later.

I remember when T2 was built O Globo had a huge article on GIG's future development plans for the next 50-ish years. Wish I had kept it... oh well.

I know that the plans included for 2 more horseshoe-shaped terminals on opposite sides of where the current 2 are, which would make the airport look remarkably like CDG. If you notice in the photo, development has been void in the areas where those two other horseshoe-shaped terminals would go.

As far as the RG maintenence base, I'm sure that can ultimately be moved eventually as well to make room for a second runway, that maintenence center has appeared to have been there for ages.

No kidding, it would look almost the same as CDG. With the roads running between the terminals and all.

Would also be a good idea to move it to a less expensive location, like CNF (GOL) or even like TAM did to the interior of S. Paulo state, in Sao Carlos.

True, but if I was Infraero I wouldn't let them do it. If you consider one more runway for POA in the future, they start running out of space. I think CPQ would be a good option for RG.

Question: How did TAM do with their maintenance facility in Sao Carlos? Was there an airport capable of receiveing A32Xs and A330s there before?

Hi all!

Iam just installed close to Jonh Wayne Airport (Orange County, CA). Nice Airport and marvellous places in southern California.

RIOJANEIRO, i always remember the same set you told for the two future terminals , T3 oposite to T1 and T4 oposite to T2, with the road between them. GIG can handle 32 to 38 million pax without major changes (and its include no need for new runways as the two keeps operational without affecting for example SDU operations.

But with the nowadays levels, GIG will only need a new terminal in 6 to 8 years, and SDU improvement can postpone this for at least 10 years.

Before any expansion plans they need to renovate T1. It looks pretty much old-fashioned if compared to T2.

Erik, there are a lot of space for T3 and T4 but as Hardi said, probably they can improve T1 (and complete T2) which can allows GIG to handle about 20 million pax per year.

I dont expect a T3 before 2016.

Yeah... it is.. lived in near Palm Springs for 6 moths in 1999 and I can tell you it is really beautiful...and there's just so many places to visit...

Extrapolating the growth rates of a few years (or bad ones) does not generate an accurate forecast. The more true in Brazil where economic growth is very unstable. Long term it is fair to say that GIG will see growth rates of 5 to 8%, so more terminal space is still very many years away. If the public safety situation in the city can have a New York style turnaround, then it could be much higher with Rio growing as an international tourism/conference/fair hub.

Also, numbers for july shows a huge improvement: more than 800,000 people (the old numbers are in my other computer which is in Sao Paulo). Besides its a high season month (but not as january), i can bet that in the whole year GIG will be a 8,7 million airport.
