While TWA runs a great airline STL sucks.. Not as bad as MEM or DTW on par with MSP but without the good shopping and eateries...

last week I spent 6 hours at STL and particulary TW's concourse C. The concourse is a little run down and tired. Frayed carpet, poor seating, and inadequate concession stands, restaurants/eateries, and restrooms. But, I love the views from concourse C. Big, unobstructed windows afford fabulous views of the operations area as well as all of the runways. I consider TW's hub at STL a diamond in the rough. With just a little money (few million) they could really spruce up the place.

Not a very nice airport. TWA is by far the biggest operator there, with close to 300 flights or so a
day. All other airlines, from United to America West,
are relegated to a single concourse. Concession
stands are few and far between, not much in the
way of shopping. TWA dominates STL but I flew
there from Newark on Continental in November.

TWA has been shrinking its JFK-Europe flight schedule since the airline sold its London Heathrow routes to
American Airlines in 1991. In January 2000, TWA
suspended operations to Rome, Madrid, and
Barcelona. It still flies to Milan, Rome, and Lisbon.
With Continental operating a mega-hub at Newark
and Delta's alliance with Air France, coupled with
United's announcement that it will operate daily
JFK-Paris flights, why is TWA still flying to Europe
and to Milan, Lisbon, and Paris, with all this
competition? Why not drop the services and
operate them from St.Louis, where there is a
greater traffic feed for this once proud airline?
Please comment.

STL has 2 terminals -- Main and East. The main terminal -- and I agree with most of the previous comments houses all airlines except Southwest. WN and charter operators operate through the East Terminal which is a new facility. It is much more pleasant, has better concessions and restaurants.

However, as an enthusiast I still prefer the older Main terminal because of the obvious variety of carriers. All you see in the East terminal are WN 737s. Also there is an Air National Guard base just next door so if you're lucky, you'll see fighter jets taking off for maneuvers. Sorry I can't tell what kind they are.

STL's terminals, with the exception of the East Terminal, need major work. There needs to me more room, more concessions, and something needs to be done about all of that brown paint! The city of St Louis (who owns the airport) needs to get it's act in gear and do something to improve the facility. I figure they should start on the A concourse and get the occupants there (basically any one other than TWA, TWE, SWA or charters) to chip in and modernize the gate area. By they time that is done maybe TWA will be in better shape and they can update the B, C, and D concourses as well.

From a service stand point, STL is a good airport. Despite the fact that the entire airport has 8 baggage carousels (2 of which are in the east terminal) I have never waited that long for my luggage. Since you will be on AA you should be arriving at one of three AA gates A10, A12, or A14 (I think those are AA's gates, although one is shared with Skyways). From there it isn't that long a walk to the baggage claim, atleast, short compared to walking from gate C-36s to baggage claim M1! All of the exits are numbered and most rental car companies/hotels have adds that tell you which exit to go out of to get to their shuttle busses. The check in area isn't very fancy, but it is bright, well lit and basically one big open space with counters on the two long walls.

I gotta agree with Acvitale though, TWA is great, but STL sucks! Enjoy your trip to STL!

STL has been embroiled in expansion controversy for years. Besides the new runway in the works, there is also major renovation planned (at least for the main terminal). If you think the concourses are ugly now, you should have seen them before TWA did redecorating back in 96/97!!

The field desperately needs the new runway. I'm amazed TWA has such great on-time statistics considering the field's layout and propensity to get backed up if there's so much as a snowflake. The parallel runways are pretty close together so they often have to close one in bad weather (which doesn't need to be that bad).

In case you're interested, the main terminal was designed by the same architect who designed the Gateway Arch.

If you approach from the east, you'll get an incredible view of downtown and the Arch. You'll see a huge TWA logo painted on the roof of the Trans World Dome - home of the Rams.

One great thing about STL, the Ambassador's Club there is fantastic. It's up on the second floor and has spectacular views of the field. You should consider paying the $25 one-time fee to visit and hang out. Have a beer and do some great spotting.

You probably won't be spending much time at STL, but in the event you have a layover of a few hours in the future, you should hop on the light rail line, which takes you to downtown. Stop at Union Station - world's largest train shed converted into a shopping/entertainment complex. Very nice.

An unexamined life isn't worth living.
