Two big Dallas-based general contractors are out millions of dollars, and Fort Worth-based American Airlines Inc. has agreed to pay $105 million, in connection with what some are calling the bungled expansion of Miami International Airport.

Dade County, Fla., officials have said the massive, 3 million-square-foot expansion of the airport's north terminal is "in severe crisis."

Construction started in 1998 and was set for completion this year, but instead is only half finished. The cost of the mile-long, $900 million project has escalated to an estimated $1.94 billion, and scores of subcontractors claim they haven't been paid for completed work.

We have an almost completed new terminal where construction was not managed by AA (and completed at or below budget I believe) for the Star Alliance with their underwhelming 19 (yes, just 19) flights per day

And we have a section of the new and very nice Concourse D on the north side done. Between that nice new section and the old A Concourse it is a total mess, thanks to AA.

The "well respected African American" airport manager mentioned in the article, Angela Gittens, was not at all responsible for this mess. She was in a no win situation, yet fought it out until the end. I really do respect her (and wish her the best in whatever new job she takes).

N62NA got it pretty head-on.

On one side, literally, we have a terminal project on time and on budget, managed by MIA, and opening next spring. Beautiful terminal.

On the other side we have a terminal project that AA insisted they must manage, which has crated a terminal that is three years overdue and $1B overbudget because of AA's poor overseeing and MIA and the local government's poor decission making and lack of taking more responsibilities.

Oh well...it will be nice when its finally done.

A large part of it was the constant squaballing between AA and MIA. They didn't work well together.

The JFK project hasn't been a picnic either. The finalized project is smaller than originally planned, but still the same $1.1B cost. Not sure exactly how that project is being managed though...is AA doing the whole thing?

With regards to the JFK project it was to be completed entirely by '06, they are now pushing for '07. It was originally envisioned to have 55-58 gates, the entire scope was reduced so when completed it will have approximately 33 gates.
