August 31: 434 flights
September 7: 407 flights
September 14: 408 flights
September 21: 408 flights
September 28: 406 flights
October 5: 388 flights
October 12: 390 flights
October 19: 390 flights
October 26: 390 flights
November 2: 375 flights

This seems like a significant shift of the spring buildup, when they added about 60 or so flights...is this going to be a seasonal pattern for the forseeable future?

You'd think that the seasonal pattern would be to add capacity at DEN to accomodate traffic heading to the mountains...

Do those numbers include UAEx? If not, this is not a new phenominon. It's been going on for several years. However; the use of RJs have been keeping the UA system departures at DEN relatively constant over the past four years.

UA at DEN 2000 vs. 2004

UA System Departures: flat

UA Seats flown out of DEN: down 25%

UA Avg seats per departure: 143 vs. 108

UA is transitioning to RJ flying. 12% of departures to 40%.

UA system has lost 20% market share in DEN over the last five years.

Although in 2000 UA needed only Concourse B for the same number of departures and 25% less traffic, in 2005 they are using 6 additional gates on Concourse A. So much for cutting costs.

This is not good news. Frontier will take advantage of this schedule pull down and add more capacity to DEN and will fill in the blanks. When UA comes back in the spring, unless there is a huge increase in traffic, UA will be in fight for their lives next spring. I can see pulling some capacity down, but not this much.
They are going to get bit this winter...unless they know something we don't...

I didn't realize that for Thursday, August 18, 2005, that Frontier/Frontier JetExpress was up to 148 flights (121 Frontier, 27 JetExpress), and that is not counting the Fresno and Dayton service that is starting on August 31! Anybody aware of what their future delivery schedule is for their new buses?

Some, perhaps, but not too much.

There is some spare capacity in the Frontier fleet because of their own slow season pull down, but several of the aircraft are rotating though mx, and then there will be the winter Florida/Mexico build up.

The next new aircraft doesn't arrive until early next year.

And as long as United hangs on to those A gates, Frontier will now be slightly constrained at DIA until the A extension is built. There are rumors that they'll just move some ops to C or start more point to point flying.

Mind you, DIA has just paid United $10 million for two of the gates, for Frontier, so at a value of $5 million per gate, United is missing out on about $30 million.

I am glad they feel they can afford it.  Smile

cheers
