The first round of combing policies is complete. For travel starting October 1, 2005 and beyond, these policies are in effect:
1. UM's. The new UM policy will change to reflect HP's current UM policy. Unaccompanied minors will be allowed only on non-stop flights, and there will be a $40 service charge per direction. US's old way had a different schedule of fees depending on where the child was traveling (domestic or international) and based on whether or not the child would be connecting or on a non-stop flight.
2. Onboard Oxygen - US currently allows the use of supplemental onboard oxygen for a charge of $100 per tank. The new policy will reflect HP's current policy and will no allow supplemental tanks of oxygen to be brought onboard. Passengers who have already made reservations for travel which begins after November first will be called and refunded or the airline(s) will find alternate transportation for these passengers. As of today, August 17, 2005 US will no longer accept reservations for passengers who require onboard oxygen for travel starting on October 1, 2005 or later.
3. The new pets policy we'll reflect America West's current policy. The new airline will not accept pets as checked luggage or cargo. The new airline will still allow three pets brought on board, two in the main cabin and one in first class per flight. The pet will have to fit into a carrier whose dimensions are specified by the carrier such that the carrier fits under the seat in front of the passenger where it must remain the entire flight. A one-way service charge of $80 will remain per pet. Service animals are still welcome on board and are of course, free of charge.
4. Hazardous materials as cargo will no longer be accepted. The policy change will reflect (again) America West's current policy. US had the license to transport such hazardous material, America West does not and has no plans to obtain such a license.
Just found these changes to be interesting and the start of finally taking steps to merge the two carriers. All this information was obtained off the employee website, and while I have not yet even looked, I am sure it is on HP's and US's websites as well.

These are all great decisions. If you are trying to combine to airlines you take the easiest rules to follow and stick to them. Varied costs for UM? BAM... UM's on non-stops only. Hazmat? Gone. Pets as checked bags or cargo? Gone (such a huge liability issue as well). Need Oxygen? Sorry, not here. (again, liability and cost). Even though percentage-wise, HP's share has been diminished due to added investors, HP is dclearly taking the lead on how this airline is going to run and look like. As former HP, I am very proud of these guys.

And THIS is where you wring a lot of the extra costs out of the operation. Trust me, AVIH, supplemental O2 - it all adds up REALLY quickly, especially in call handling time for reservations and loss of productivity at the airports.
