Belair At SFO?

I was driving on 101 northbound near 101/92 interchange about 6 pm and I saw what looked like Belair Boeing 767 on approach. As I passed SFO, I saw the airplane was going to terminal 1. Does anybody know what it's doing at SFO? TIA.

Interesting, I saw this plane about a month ago parked next to our BA 747. Not sure exactly what it's doing here but I'll try to look into it for ya.

Actually, according to the Belair website, it looks like the flight is routed ZRH-LAS-SFO-ZRH.

exactly.. it's a seasonal charter flight. Every thursday ZRH-LAS-SFO-ZRH from end of june till early september. Belair belongs to the company which I'm working for and last year I was in Las Vegas with that flight. This year it was pretty popular.

Belair have been flying that route for quite a while now. They started when they were still called Balair/CTA in the early 90s and flew there with the A310.

...and before, when I was a CTA (Switzerland)">BB (Balair) Crewmember, we used to serve it even with a DC-10-30ER we got from Swissair for this route. This plane was in 3 class configuration and probably the cheapest way to fly First Class between California and Switzerland.
With the SR DC-10 we used to do it nonstop. Later on we didn't receive the plane any more as SR used them as well, as the delivery for the MD-11 was delayed. So we started to do it with our own DC-10-30 (HB-IHK) which was in a two class configuration. Due to the higher load of passengers we did then the "classic" ZRH-BGR-SFO v.v. routing.
When HB-IHK left the fleet in April 92 we started to fly it with the new A310-325 HB-IPL and HB-IPM) also on the route ZRH-BGR-SFO v.v. With this plane it was even possible to fly the way home, SFO-ZRH nonstop, but we didn't do it, as we had a crew change in BGR and it would have resulted in excessive positioning. The BGR stop was also quite popular with the passengers, as it was fast and gave them a little rest before going to sleep on the route BGR-ZRH. In 94 finally the flight to SFO was rerouted trough Halifax instead of Bangor, as Balair was experimenting with new markets. The success was zero...

So if they successes on these others were zero.. why did they stop the florida routes? Miami and Orlando with the A310s back in the 90's. The seasonal Miami route was again started for the summer of 2001 with 767s (after I believe a year of absence). That was the last year they flew it.

Especially now that Edelweiss is not doing the Orlando (SFB) flights anymore, who don't they fill the void of that market share?

You probably misunderstood me or I missexpressed. The success on the Zürich - Halifax route was nothing, as they only had a small number of passengers for this section and in addition empty seats to the west coast then, as BB couldn't sell the part Halifax - San Francisco. The ZRH - SFO part sold well. They also had the big advantage, that on the ZRH - BGR- SFO route as on other routes going trough BGR, customes and immigration was cleared in BGR which is one of the most convenient port in the USA and passengers only could walk out, once in SFO. This was for sure no more the case coming from Canada either, something passengers didn't like then, as they were used to the fast and friendly BGR service.

About Florida, you need to consider that BB was basically building this market and once it was stable, SR took it over. When I started with BB in 87 we had one seasonal weekly flight on the ZRH - MIA route. Later this became a second and once in the nineties SR started a daily flight ZRH - MIA. This was the moment, BB was out of the market.

Orlando is more a question what the tour operators want and sell best. If they sell a lot of trips to Disney, they set up a charter flight, if there are less, they put them on LX or another airline trough MIA.

Edelweiss is owned by Kuoni, Belair by Hotelplan, two of Switzerlands main tour operator. So the schedules of those two airlines do basically reflect the current program of those two tour operators. So if you won't see one of those two airlines, it doesn't mean that there is no demand at all to this place, it may just be that somebody else took them the business, flying with another operator.

I have to admit I saw Balair A310 planes only a few times in Orlando, including the one in old red colors in 1990. So didnt know if these were seasonal or just rare charters and just happened to see them. Didn't know they had gone daily to MIA at one point. In the late 90s it was only on Wednesdays if I recall correctly.

I flew Balair back in the day a number of times on the SFO route. I did the DC-10 twice, the A310 though Bangor twice and the A310 through Calgary once.
It was always great and I vaguely remember stars being painted on the inside of the A310.

Thanks for clearing this up for me -- I remember seeing the "Balair" name on a sign in front of the older terminals @ SFO and wondered why I never saw any planes nor signage in the terminals.

The sign itself seemed to connote some type of permanent "scheduled" service ( i.e. daily like Lufthansa or KLM) -- perhaps just in my own mind though.  Wink
