As someone who lived in the Antelope Valley for ten years, I am glad to see any kind of service out of PMD once again. I took them all when I was there, America West, Skywest, United Express. It would be great for a mainline airline to come back. The best was AW PMD-LAS. Right to the hub and on from there. The ease and convince of PMD could not be matched. Not having to drive to LAX or ever BUR. Ahhhhhhh.....what a relief. Too bad Scenic can't do better than even the 1900. I had a hairy and hilarious ride on one one time on UA Express from LAX-PMD. It's only a 15 minute flight, but it was Santa Ana wind season. Only me and one other guy on the flight. The pilot comes back with a extra serious look and says, "Gentlemen, strap down real tight, it's going to be a bumpy ride." And it was! We were all over the place! The longest 15 minutes in flight I've ever had! I think the biggest problem with getting the locals to fly out of PMD is that you could never get them out of the mindset of,"Well, I can just drive to LAX." This despite the hassle of getting there, always wondering what awaited you traffic wise on the 405. Then the hassle of LAX itself. I got stalled in traffic too long once. I finally get to the ticket counter and the CSA says, "If you run like hell, you can catch the plane!" I run like hell, plop down in the seat, the boarding door closes behind me and the pilot comes on,"Ladies and Gentleman, we will be delayed here in Los Angeles for an hour due to weather in Denver." Oh so many wonderful stories out of LAX.  sarcastic

Ah, it's good to see a former AV local around A.net. Big grin Indeed the problem is getting residents here from the state of mind driving everywhere to having them fly a bit. Originally, I thought the PMD-VGT was a nice alternative to taking the 14, then 58, then 15 to get to Vegas but the flight on a DHC-6 wasn't all that great though I loved the convenience of them offering free shuttles to hotels around Vegas and the fact that I just payed 50 bucks one way.  bigthumbsup  Hopefully it would look more appealing with the 1900. With the rise in fuel prices and the I-15 getting cluttered with more and more SoCal weekend vacationers getting to and from Sin City, especially southbound during Sundays  bomb , hopefully flying Scenic would look more appealing.

Glad to see that not everybody has given up on the Antelope Valley.

Back in the mid-80's, while I was working for the L.A. County Aviation Division (we owned and operated Fox Field in Lancaster, among others), we had service at Fox from Desert Sun Airlines, who served the airport with Navajo's and Beech 99's. During that period, TWExpress was operating out of PMD with Twin Otters. Ahh, the good old days.

I hope that PMD is one of those "Airports to Watch".

I think that Scenic's problem is that it is using the wrong guage of airplane. Wouldn't a 19-seat Beechcraft have a CASM of more than 30 cents, significantly higher than a 50-seat CRJ. It is that the high CASM requires Scenic to charge $250 one-way fares. A WN business model with $49 one way fares would attract a whole lot more passengers, including those outside the Palmdale area (but still in LA County).

I think that WN needs to consider its options. LAX is getting crowded. WN's terminal at LAX is operating overcapacity, and it looks like in the future WN will have difficulties growing its operation. I think that WN's future for LA lies at PMD. I think that by 2012 (that's 7 years from now) WN could have an 8-10 gate operation with about 80-100 flights a day.

I think its going to take a miracle to get enough passengers on Scenic's flights before they pull out, as they are threatening to do. The service has been on since December and they still cannot yet brake even. I was checking PMD's statistics available on-line, and I'm trying to make something out of them.

2005 - Passengers using Palmdale Airport.
January - 656
February - 445
March - 487
April - 410
May - 570
June - 535
July - not yet available

I also don't get Scenic's announcement. They claim they need 21 passengers to brake even? Does that mean they need seven coming to PMD and seven going to VGT? They can't possibly mean that they need 21 passenger per flight, since their Beech 1900D only has capacity for 19 passengers?

The best thing for Palmdale to do is to actually spend the money to advertise the flights on billboards, buses, newspapers. It's costly, but effective and can actually save the flights from disappearing. Otherwise, don't bet any other feeder carrier for a mainline to come around knocking o on your door for the next five years.

I'm actually very temped to fly out of PMD. Interestingly enough, I live about 15 mins away from Downtown L.A. I have never flown on a prop and I'm interested in flying on a Beech 1900D. I asked my friend and he said he was up to it. He doesn't care about Aviation, but he likes Vegas. So, I just might support the service. If only they flew on Saturdays... Darn it!

The CAP squadron I'm a part of has their meetings in the terminal at Fox...though I've heard of commercial air service in that airport, it's hard to imagine those days. Just wish I was around to see those times.  Sad

It somewhat still does attract passengers as far south as Santa Clarita, though I've only heard of such occasions when Scenic began flying out of here.

Amen on the advertising part! Other than getting headlines in the AV edition of the Daily News and Valley Press, print advertisements, along with the overall promotion of flights to Vegas, have been weak. The only one I've seen was in the Aerotech News which is avaliable throughout the valley for free. Billboard-wise, I've seen three around here but thats about it. I was in Idaho when they began and of course I was disappointed to not be around for the first flight.  Sad Anyhow, I highly recommend coming up here! You get free parking in PMD and there's a complimentary shuttle to Vegas resorts. Big grin But indeed, unfortunately the schedule is evidence of the scaling-back Scenic has done here. Before there was daily flights with some days recieving two or three daily. When I checked the schedule a couple weeks ago, I was surprised to see that they didn't offer flights 7 days a week anymore. :
