Any News Concerning Syrianair?

Would somebody have any recent developements regarding Syrianair ?
Is there any document outlining their strategy for the next years to come ?
Damascus has never been considered as exchange-airport for ongoing trafic from Europe to Asia ,but is there any chance Syrianair will grow to become a less-invisible player in the Middle-east airlines envirenemt.
I figured out that Syrianair is one of the safest airlines,since their safety-record does not show any fatal accident within the last 25 years.

I have heard that Syrian Air is a very badly run airline with lots of corruption in its management. In terms of service, I have heard they are just OKAY, but nothing out of ordinary. However, there are always delays and cancellations, so they are not very reliable.

I gotta tell you, their scheduling and routing is so erratic and terrible. They will have to resolve that before they can dream of being an airline that offers connections through Damascus.

Supposidly they are going to place an Airbus order soon, but I am not sure if that will happen now considering the political attitudes towards Syria ever since the assassination of Lebanese Prime Minister Rafic Hariri back in February.

The latest I've heard (as of a few days ago), together with MEA, plans are being made to launch the air taxi service between Lebanon and Syria called Phoenician Airlines. Supposidly the routes will be Damascus - Aleppo, Beirut - Damascus, and Beirut - Aleppo. I believe they plan on getting Dash 8-300s.

I'm surprised the plan to launch Phoenician Airlines is still on considering the poor relations between Lebanon and Syria right now following Hariri's assassination...

As far as through connections are concerned, I understand that they are a popular option for LHR-BOM. Evidently they offer one of the cheapest fares around.

I've heard that are a generally a very mis-managed airline, maintaining older aircraft, operating unprofitable routes, and relying on large government subsidies.

Anyone knoe if they're still operating the TU-134s?

They should still operate TU134s on domestic flights (supposedly on Damascus-Aleppo service) since one of them has been painted in new color scheme.
They also have to place a widebody order (A330s ???) , since both their 747SPs become tired , and near their end of life.
They need some widebodies for DAM-BOM route , since flights are full as mentionned above , due to their low fares.
Anyway a kind of mysterious airline , thinking of the Aeroflot during the USSR time.

They have only one in operation now and it is the only one in the new colors. It is used as a VIP transport, usually for Bashar al-Assad, but I think it also operates on the Damascus - Aleppo route.

I suppose you are of lebanese origins so the most recent assasinations of lebanese personalities by syrian agents is of course not helping to create good neighbourly feelings.Regardless of the quality of the political regime in Damascus ( which is at least not pro-actively searching a modern and democratic stance),I found the population in Syria (Aleppo and Damascus )very friendly and hospital.
But the remark about Syrianair being a secretive and badly managed airline is basically the reason I opened this thread ,in order to collect some more information about the airline,since you never hear anything about them .
I would wish things change to the better in Damascus and both airlines,MEA and Syrianair find the way to growth and sustained profitability.

MEA could (should) perfectly build its own regional network to feed its BEY Hub.

We don't need the Syrians and Syrianair for this.
Knowing how it works in Syria and for Syrianair, I think from the beginning that this "joint venture" airline is not a very good idea, as too much politics would interfere.
MEA is perfectly capable of buying a few turboprob a/c (ATR42/72 for example) and built with it a strong efficient regional network from BEY to DAM, AMM, LCA, CAI, ALY, LTK, ALP, SSH, GZA ...

I think Syrianair (and Iran Air) are to be commended for their maintaining an aging fleet of 722 and 74L aircraft in service. Syrianair's perfect accident record is testimony to at least some competence from an engineering or mx basis, however corrupt their mgmt may be.



Panam, TWA, Ansett, Eastern.......AC next? Might be good for Canada.

I fully agree with you that MEA don't need Syrainair to do whatsover -that was not the question I initially asked anyhow...
The relationship between the two countries will remain strained as long as no moderate ,democratically elected government will be installed in Damscus- agreed again. But this is an aviation forum and I try to gather inputs on Syrianair -that's all - without any political weighting or historically motivated comments.

And the fleet its only composed with A320, B727 and B747SP. TU3 are stored in Damascus Airport, TU5 are too stored and YK4's and AN6 are operated by the Syrian Air Force.

I agree that MEA is perfectly capable of establishing Phoenician Airlines on its own, but Syria will not let them have all the cake. They want to have some of the cake too which is why it will be owned 25% by MEA, 25% by Syrian Air, and the rest of the 50% will be by investers (Lebanese, Syrian, and maybe some foreign).

According to MEA's CEO, Mohammed El-Hout, the original plan was to get turboprops, however, because of the bad image and reputation of turboprops in the Middle East, they are considering regional jets.
