I'm curious as to what the status of the FedEx hub at GSO is. I haven't heard about it in quite some time. Is construction underway? Whats the expected time it'll go into operation?

Thanks much!

Current status is that facility and highway construction is underway. As far as I can tell, no work on the new north runway. They are expecting to be established by 2009 I believe.

Didn't see anything tonight when I flew in...only construction going on was the expansion of the North Concourse.

Well, just wait till you see it in the daytime. They've already closed Old Oak Ridge rd. and begun leveling most of the land in the area.

They've started grading and laying things out for the terminal on the northern end of the airport.

They started the improvements to the crosswind runway, but still no word on when the lengthening will be complete. Old Oak Ridge Rd is closed and being re-routed, Bryan Blvd is currently reworked, clearing for the new runway has begun to an extent.

Passenger wise, New Security screening areas and North Concourse expansion for Delta has started and is nearly complete.

Tarmac Pad for Tradewinds is being reinforced to handle the weight of 747s, so I'm told.

747s? When did FedEx get 747s? DC-10s, maybe?

If it pisses off the right, I'm all for it.

I think Fedex aquired some 747s when they bought Flying Tigers back in the 90's.

Wow! Interesting...and all that time I was spotting at IND and never saw one. Wonder where they use them?

I didn't know the crosswind runway was being extended. What are they going to lengthen it too? Are the plans still on for the 2nd parallel runway? If so, what will its length be?

Flyf15,

I am fairly certain that UPS, FedEx and Tradewinds lobbied for the lengthening of the crosswind runway. It currently sits at 6600ft. They are supposed t obe taking it to 10,000ft like the main runway now. One a really windy crosswind day, the heavies still have the land on the main. If you have ever seen that happen, you'd understand why.

Currently, Tradewinds is not using their 747s in GSO except for maint. Someone told me that there is a possibility of a GSO to West Coast 747 flight. I dunno, Tradewinds wants 8 747s to go with their 20 or so A300s.

As for the FedEx L10 being scrapped, I have no idea. There's a ATI jet being scrapped at TIMCO now.

Yes, but they don't use them for operations anymore. That service stopped a long time ago, as the MD-11, MD-10, and DC-10's took over all the heavy long-haul routes. I'm not sure who they sold or leased them to exactly, but I could find out. I just know that 747's haven't been in service with FedEx for quite a while.

As for the L-1011 that jet was repoed by a maintenance company called Gearbuck after Tradewinds did not keep current it's payments with them for cleaning and servicing it. It is now slowly being scrapped down around the mailhouse, as a sidenote it does have some pretty neat damage from a nearby lightning strike back in December of '04.
