Here's what I've just heard on the radio while getting back home from work: a JAT Airways B737 and an Air France A340 have missed each other by 60m somewhere in Hungarian air space.
Allegedly, both planes were flying in the same direction and somehow came to only a 60m vertical distance.
It said on the news that Hungarian authorities didn't issue any statements as yet.
Any more precise info?
From the link you posted, it seams that the Hungarian officials' standpoint is that "it wasn't that dramatic...", but obviously, unofficial statements lead to the conclusion that on-board Collision Avoidance Systems on both a/c and the fact that both crews were on alert helped avoid the crash.
Of course, this was a good opportunity for some media to bash JAT Airways a bit more, since it appeared (allegedly) on the FAA's "black list". There was even a thread started here on a.net regarding this issue, where it was concluded that it wasn't logical, since JAT has recently signed a codeshare agreement with LH.

Yes, but they claim to have done everything by the book (or almost...), as you can see: they claim that they have instructed the AF pilot to descend in order to avoid the collision. How on Earth could it happen that the two airliners traveling in the same direction come to such a small distance, remains to be explained.
All in all, it is a very good outcome that nobody got hurt and a potential disaster has been avoided.

I was the one who posted about this article. Personally, I think Srpski Nacional just looks for anything scandalous they can post, they found a semi-credible Italian paper, so they shot it right on their front page and sent it to all of the Stampas and Politikas in town. That article, in and of it self, had at least 2 major factual mistakes.
It's on the front page, main story of BLIC newspaper here in Serbia, and they say that JAT reported that the a/c were "500m from eachother", even though the Hungarins said 80, and the incident made the cover of the other papers.
I agree completely with you regarding the "Srpski Nacional" newspaper.
Regarding the incident, that 500 m distance was also mentioned by the Hungarian Air Traffic Control spokeswoman. If she is correct, then there was nothing to report, is there? I mean, isn't it correct that the vertical distance between two planes in the air should be min 1.000 Ft (approx. 300 m)? That means that the 500 m distance is OK? I mean if it's vertical distance we're talking about.
