I've got a few AA questions mostly related to Miami so I thought I'd bundle them all into one post...


1. AA seems to be slowly expanding its MIA operation with new destinations. Anybody wanna venture an educated guess what the chances are of the following cities getting N/S service?

MCI, LIT, BUF, PVD, SAN, MDW

2. Anybody know how the new ORF-MIA service is doing?

3. I see AA is not taking new 738 deliveries until something like 2013. It would seem that with the redeployment of the 752 fleet for a transatlantic expansion there's going to be a need for an aircraft with comparable range and capacity to fill those markets from which the 752s will inevitably have to be taken. Is there some flexibility to this delivery schedule? I.e. if AA asks would it be possible to move up those deliveries if they so chose? And besides by 2013 one would think that the rumored 737 replacement project would be well underway.

4. How has aircraft redeployment operation been going from a money standpoint, all the 738s to MIA and all MD80s in DFW and ORD? Makes spotting a little less interesting but if it saves money great.

MAH would definitely be the one to ask about this, but I think, IIRC, that MCI, BUF, PVD, and SAN are all being looked at, along with about another 10-15 cities that might see nonstop MIA service in the next few years.

LIT and MDW -- I wouldn't hold my breath.

I think it's doing pretty well, like the other new Eagle MIA routes.

Yes, but AA is increasing its domestic capacity extremely slowly so that it can simultaneously increase international capacity dramatically.

Yes -- AA can speed up those 738 deliveries at any time if it wants to and, depending on how well they can get into the black over the next few years (and thus depending on how bad fuel prices get), they very well might move up some of the 738 deliveries.

It has been an immense, overwhelming success. It saves on maintenance, servicing, equipment, logistics, planning, staffing, spare parts, crew basing, etc.

We could probably add MIA-PHX and MIA-SEA to the list of potential flights, yes? Here's one for the books - seasonal MIA-ANC - from cruise ship to cruise ship.

What about a Wal-Mart express MIA-XNA with an RJ?

It is or was being looked at recently, possibly with a fri/sat/sun or sat only service.

I would look for a DFW-GCM flight soon, again possibly weekend only service.

Miami-Norfolk is doing very well. All the new RJ flights are. Not that hard to fill them up and good yields. Norfolk might get a second daily in the winter. I know Greensboro is supposed to.

In terms of new Eagle routes, look for Birmingham, Alabama next, from what I've heard. It was supposed to be announced by now. Fayetteville/XNA is also looking more likely as a weekend service, especially after DL's XNA-MCO announcement. Eagle is also looking at Austin, San Antonio, Greer, Savannah, and Pensacola.

Phoenix is supposed to be the next mainline domestic city. Seattle, Providence, San Diego, and Kansas City are being looked at. MIA-SAN may replace BOS-SAN next winter. There has been talk about Pittsburgh and Columbus getting a daily 738. I wouldn't be surprised if PIT did; I don't expect CMH to.

They also would like to start some longer-haul RJ routes out of Miami using CRJ-700s. Buffalo, Albany, Rochester, Milwaukee, and Ottawa have been talked about. However, they don't have enough CR7s to go around, so those will have to wait. Some are within ERJ range, but with the heavy amount of luggage cruise travelers bring, it would hurt.

There is absolutely no timeline for any of this. American Airlines and American Eagle have a highly utilized fleet, and growth must come at the expense of other services. In the next two years, you will see AA strenghteing their MIA/ORD/DFW hubs and connecting more dots at the expense of service from focus cities and other large non-hub operations (like BOS, RDU, and SJC), except for LAX and LGA/JFK, which will continue to grow.

As we've seen this year, more and more routes are about connecting the empty gaps from hubs. DFW-MSN, ORD-JAX, MIA-GSO, etc. It used to be you can get to Richmond on AA from Boston, but not Miami or St. Louis. Now they have MIA/STL-RIC (2x daily each), but no more BOS-RIC service (which was 4x daily at peak).

I wouldn't. Traffic to Grand Cayman has dropped of heavily since 2004's hurricane season. AA has cut MIA-GCM capacity almost in half, while ending JFK-GCM. Cayman Airways will soon be cutting Houston. Traffic has really fallen to the island. And AA's performance on DFW-NAS leaves a lot to be desired. It hasn't been a huge hit.
