Widebodies In South Texas Airports

Hey guys just wondering, has anybody ever seen a widebody in one of the three Rio Grande Valley Airports. I know MFE had Air Force 1, I beleive HRL gets A310 from FedEx and use to fly Sun Country's DC-10's and I'm not sure about BRO.

But please do give your opinions and if you have seen some at MFE please let me know.

At one point there was a shipment of a bunch of computers through the FedEx terminal down there and had a 727 come in for it. I wouldn't really consider that a widebody, but I'm sure it was kind of interesting for the location.  Big grin

Not IAH--I believe its Waco or something and then a helicopter from their. I know its not IAH though. As far as widebodies in the Valley--only SY DC10s in the past at HRL. The closest thing to a heavy at MFE was CO 757s from IAH.

A few weeks ago I was driving near HRL, and I noticed two FedEx planes an A310 and B727, plus they also get the bax global DC-8 (not sure about the cargo airline, but I am sure about the DC-8)

The Air Force has occasionaly done some touch and go practice in a C5A transport at Corpus Christi International. Which is quit a site to see as longest runway 13/31 is only 7508 ft. long!

I seem to remember flying a BN 747 out of CRP for some special event when I was very very very young. My mother and I went to Dallas for the day in F just to ride up on it as I recall. I may be dreaming as I was something like 3 at the time.

Just curious, what's in HRL that would require a DC10? Is there that much tourism in S. Padre? Or was the 10 only there for spring break?

Wow that had to have been pretty cool! I flew on Braniff a few times but was way to young to remember. A 747 out of Corpus would have been a sight to see. Although with that light a fuel load I’m sure it didn’t use up that much runway. That would have required some tricky ground maneuvers as the taxiways at KCRP aren’t all that wide but not impossible. Considering Sugar Land airport gets some 757’s some times. There is only one taxiway they can use at Sugar Land and the maneuver requires a tow vehicle and backing up down the runway to make the turn. My brother works out there for Hertz and has seen them do it. The cool thing about Sugar Land is there is no fence so you can get really close to departing traffic kind of like Saint Marteen The end of the runway is very close to the Union Pacific mainline and trains sometimes have to hold for approaching air traffic. Anyone have pictures of Sugar Land to show what I am talking about?

As far as daily widebodies go, it seems that only FedEx fits the bill down south. Here's what I found:

MEM-HRL FDX1465 A310
MEM-LRD FDX1617 A310

UPS flies a 752 into HRL, but, that doen't count. Other than that, Custom Air Transport flies their 722's into HRL and LRD alot. FedEx also services both airports with a daily 727.

I knew his vertical fleet was there but I never knew AF1 came in. I know they have parked it at GRK many times and have a lot of his logistics stuff based at Ft. Hood. Who knows...I do know that his aircraft, 29000, did a practice approach to ABI's ILS 35R one time when I just happened to be driving by it! Didn't expect to see that thing pop out of the clouds there!

Whoa! AF1? At AUS? When did this happen? I guess it wouldn't show up on the schedules would it?  Wink What a treat you witnessed! The runway at AUS is pretty long, and can definitely accomodate AF1. (12,521ft)

On several occasions throughout the late 80s CO would have DC10s op in/out of CRP... I'm certain that the 10 wasn't the scheduled equipment but I know they were operating segments of scheduled flights from IAH... I can only imagine the 10s then operated charters outbound.

They would always park at the Express gate and use airstairs for the DC-10s as CO's mainline gate had the kind of jetway that's bolted to the ground (no wheel). I guess the piston/pivot on the jetway couldn't reach the door of the -10.

More remarkable for CRP are the occasional sightings of the AN-124 for refinery equipment transport. Talk about a hairy taxi. They always park her at the south end of the signature ramp right next to the customs facility and the old tower... she takes up the entire ramp.

Back in '99, when Airforce 1 went down to MFE, the aircraft was parked right next to the terminal and the control tower, the 747 was basiclly larger than the terminal, and at the time there was a CO MD-81 at the gate, and looked real small compared to Air Force 1.

Austin and San Antonio get Airborne 767s. Laredo has seen Evergreen 747s, Centurion DC-10s and Atlas/Polar 747s

Sorry buddy, reread my post. I said ABI...which is even more impressive!  Big grin

I wouldn't doubt that AF1 would try to come into Austin somewhere but I would imagine that it would grab too much attention and take too much time with the airspace there. But, anywhere in Texas he goes is nice!  Big grin

IIRC, the AF1 visit to IAH was tied in with his father's library being commissioned up in the College Station area (forgive me if wrong about that portion)...There were other current and former heads of state in town for the unveiling and some even flew COEX to the final destination (CLL again I think).
