Anyone Have Experience Of Air New Zealand LHR-LAX?

Hi there,
I am planning to fly LHR - LAX in late September and wanted to know if anyone has any experience of this that they could share?
I've flown this route before on BA and wanted to try something else, but since I'm on a shoestring budget I have to be prudent with my choice, so that rules out a lot of the ones I'd like to have flown with such as VS but by chance Air New Zealand has a good offer at the moment on their site for around £380 which is pretty good compared to some of the prices I've seen.

I had a quick look to see what the interior is like on the 744 but alas nothing shows up to give me an idea of what to expect. I checked out New Zealand's website to see but all I found was something about them upgrading interior starting November which is too late for me.

So if there's anyone who has flown New Zealand from LHR-LAX I'd be grateful if they could share their experiences, such as food, IFE, f/a, punctuality etc(Trip reports section doesnt show much either)

Thanks in advance

I flew NZ on ALK-LAX-LHR back in 1996, I found the flight excellent, although that was 9yrs ago!

NZ 744's are getting new cabins fitted (w/PTV's), with seats the same as VS's Upper Class!

Does anyone have any pics of NZ's new Y class?

BTW - Does anyone know how NZ's plans for new LHR services are going?

Rob!  Smile

I'm a regular on that route (AKL-LAX-LHR actually). You have a very high chance of very good cabin service. But the real issue is - when are you flying? The overall product is now getting a bit tired and behind the market - but that all changes later this year with the refitted cabins being introduced including up to date IFE.

...ahhhh...no! Perhaps another airline, or bs.

Virgin744, no, you probably wont get an upgraded 744 in late sep.

Check out www.airnz.com there is something to the right of the main page with a short interactive presentation.

Never thought to take any pics of the INSIDE until recently. Am next flying AKL-LAX-LHR on September 16th. Doesn't seem much point in taking shots of an obsolete product then, but will do so for my historical record

In the meantime you can see the inside of Saabs, ATRs and 737s, together will global out the window and airport shots at

Actually this is correct. ZK-SUJ had 2 external cameras that were activated for take-off and landing. However these have been deactivated due to her being upgraded at the moment. So no, it wasn't b.s.

ZK-SUI I think is the only B747-400 in ANZs fleet that is installed with the new interior and flying.

It is flying right now to regular B747-400 destinations. There is a slight chance you could have it on the LAX-LHR route in September.

IMO I would choose BA if I was not guaranteed that I would get the new interior.

Do you know if they will remain when SUJ returns to service, or if they are being removed? Are there plans for them on the 777s or the rest of the 747 fleet?

777ER,

The camera's stay, but the system is not active any more. This makes it easier to put back to original config when the lease is up.

NZ747

I agree SUJ wasn't flying back then, but thought I would mention that she did in fact have a camera. They didnt always put it on which was a bummer, but it was a nice feature to have.

VirginFlyer

There are no plans to fit out the rest of the 744 fleet. The 777's won't have them fitted either.

Cheers

I have heard some people (friends from new zealand) prefer cathay pacific due to better on flight entertainment but other than that people I have known who fly with them say the service is good.

the check in girls and gate staff are amongst some of the best at heathrow but then of course I am very biased as they are us!!

air NZ has very high standards with uniform etc so hopefully that high standards spreads throughout on board too. They pay united extra on the contract for the staff to wear air nz uniform. We normally check in other airlines in our normal united uniform but for that you have to change into a whole different outfit and even swap handbags over as they are different!

was quite cruel air nz even made everyone wear an all blacks badge for the rugby as well  Sad

err nope sorry, for that I would have to even like rugby which I don't at all but this is possibly because my caveman ex husband used to whoop whoop at the tv when it was on and drove me eternally mad. I dislike football too and it should all be banned from tv especially when it gets in the way of very good programmes!

that said....the men are very sexy and the legs corrrrrrrrr and I did almost submit to calling one of my boys Jonah.

so recap...sexy men and legs yep it's good  Wink and I live right near twickenham rugby ground too..what a waste eh!

I think around £400 return is the limit of what I want to spend at the moment and ANZ seems to have a good deal going - for a 744 flight hence my thought of flying with them.
I'm slightly disappointed that the interior has been noted to be rather dated and worn and that the planned upgrades will not come soon enough for me, but with my budget in mind I dont seem to have many options.

I have found Air Lingus for a good price @ £360 all in. And it's tempting to try an A330 but looking at their interior and other reports it seems as if they wont be any better than ANZ. BA are my only realistic alternative but I just cant find anything near £400 with them and I'll do anything to avoide flying AA. I just dont think I could fly them agian unless it was a free flight and I was on anything other than Eco.

After reading the comments above I really have to ask myself is the extra money I'd pay to fly with BA (the next step up) really worth it?

I've looked around on a few sites and I'm really trying hard to check out the variety on offer that fly to LAX but I dont think I will get any better than ANZ for the price.

There is a slight chance you will get the PTVs on board, but that is taking a risk. There is a 99% chance you will have excellent in flight service on NZ though.
