When I was younger my lived and breathed aviation, just like many of you. It was my hobby and I was very determined to become a pilot. At the time I thought I knew quite a bit about aviation, but if I see what some of the people on this forum know I realize I knew next to nothing. Even though much of this knowledge is absolutely trivial I have to say that I am very impressed with some of you. But...do you still have any kind of social life ?

There's also an art in appearing to know what you're talking about!
(Doesn't apply to me though - I haven't mastered that art.)

As for a life... there isn't just aviation, there's talking about
it on the internet as well. Oops, I've said too much.

I'm not an expert in aviation but talking about life, just after posting this I'm leaving to see a rock concert and to drink some beers and nice girls. (Saturday night fever)

Wait till you all go to Hong Kong. Then you can talk about a social life (night on the town with your friends). Speaking of becming a pilot and having a social life I have come up with a theroy. In the stages into becoming an airline pilot you shouldn't have a big social life. In other words study your ass off. Once you get to your goal, whatever it is, then go out alot and have fun.

I talk about aviation with just about anybody who will listen. When I meet somebody for the first time I usually know what planes and airlines they have flown before I know their age or even their second name. That's sad isn't it?

About a social life.....well I used to have one until my first son was born. Getting up at 4am severely restricts your social life. My children and aviation are my two passions in life, in that order.

Listen and you will learn...
This website, books, videos, going to the airport, asking questions, the internet, searches, Airliners and Airways Mags, going up to the cockpit before (or during if you're a NON-US airline) and asking, pick it up gradually. Study. As for my social life... this is it (JK). No, I do other stuff.

Jack.

Aviation is my dedication NUMBER ONE in life, like with most of you here, yeah. I don't know as much of it as some others do, especially concerning the very technical side. And I also sometimes wonder, just like you: "Gee... these people know-it-all" :). Reading the posts is very educating, and I've learned a lot since I started coming here last September.

My main interest is upon airlines of various countries, planes they fly, airports, inflight procedures and stuff like that... I can identify any type of modern commercial and military transport, but I still sometimes confuse stuff like B737-300 and 400 and so on...

Also, I'm a bit into military aviation but not quite as much as with civil/commercial.

However aviation is not all I think of while I'm awake or during my university classes :). I also like ornithology (bird-watching), but that's kinnda a weak area for me at the moment.

Mainly, I'm now into webdesign and DTP. That kinnda provides a good fun and helps with my coursework, too...

Apart form that, no, I have no social life, whatsoever.

Life is all about planes and design! :).
