Hello, everyone! I just noticed the following article in biz.yahoo:

China Airlines to Buy 10 Boeing Planes

http://biz.yahoo.com/ic/n/airlin.html

The title is a misnomer. It should have been China Southern...not China Airlines. In any case, does anyone know if this is part of the large Chinese order that was announced weeks/months ago or is this additional?

Another airline selecting the 787 to go along with the A330s, but then its one of big three in China, which all are in the market of collecting all sorts of aircraft types.

Yes it's the confirmation of one part of the large Chinese order placed some months ago.

That's right, 52 of the original 60 are now "firmed" leaving Hainan as the only carrier yet to finalise their order for 8. Air China filed yesterday that their 15 were "firmed" on August 8th.

Politic's always plays a role in Chinese orders and with the President due in the U.S. shortly Boeing will be able to list these on their site once the Politicians have spoken. Interestingly 50 737's will also be announced of which I assume 45 are for the China Southern Group.

wow. Hainan Airlines loosely committing to 8 787's? Ambitious to say the least. I would be interested to know what their strategy would be in utilizing these, as Hainan (the island) pretty much shuts down between May-Sept.

Does this quell fears that because all the orders weren't firmed at the same time, they weren't going to be?

Yes. The Politic's have a strong influence on these orders in addition to those for Airbus. Of note, these orders were all held back from being "firmed" until after China officially revalued the Yuan thus making the aquisition cost even cheaper for the carriers involved. Same goes for the 737s

Some were saying the Chinese airlines were considering swapping the 787s to A350s a month or so back .
