Just across the news. United is allowing Frequent Flyers to donate $50 or more to Hurricane Katrina relief Aid and receive 500 skymiles.

AA Offers Relief in Hurricane Aftermath

Just hours after the FAA cleared one runway in MSY to accept emergency flights, American was the first carrier --commercial or military -- to land since the storm, bringing relief to some of the thousands of employees and customers devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

Carrying 8,400 pounds of bottled water and non-perishable food on the way in, the flight was unloaded and returned to DFW as a rescue mission. In addition to a number of employees and family members, AA filled the plane with customers who had been stranded at the airport for days, after martial law was declared and flooding cut them off from the rest of the city.

"It took the efforts of many departments working together to pull this off so quickly," said Tom Del Valle, VP U.S./Canada Division, Customer Service. "From SOC, Crew Scheduling and Security to Customer Service, Flight and Flight Service, there was no shortage of volunteers.

"Everyone involved executed their jobs flawlessly. There was an incredible focus and determination to make this happen for our customers and fellow employees," continued Del Valle. "In less than 8 hours time, we located an aircraft, crew, and supplies -- airlifted them to New Orleans -- and returned with a full planeload of grateful people."

A team of management employees from HDQ Customer Service accompanied the relief supplies and unloaded the plane, where operations will not resume until early next week.

United operated a 757 into MSY today (Sept. 1) in cooperation with the American Red Cross and America's Second Harvest. There were 50 medical technicians on board along with 20,960 LBS of supplies.

In addition, United is paying their MSY employees their normal salaries during this period. (They are also paying the employees that are missing).

I am happy that AA, UA, CO, and WN are doing something, espically with the fuel costs and man hours involved...is it worth it, yes, but with the industry as it is it is very important...NOTE...3/4 of the carriers are turning profit! So UA is the real hero, fighting CH11 and still finding room for this!

I am suprised DL has not done anything as well as B6...B6 is very charitable and I am suprised they have not sent a crew down there or sent some planes to like IAH to help evacuate people to NYC or other areas. I can imagine Houston is a mess as well right now.

That is an unfortunately real possibility but look at it this way: The money that would go to the employees will inevitably go to their families, who no doubt need it very much.

According to the company only 69 MSY based employees have checked in with the company. Frankly, the emails they have sent to us sound very worried. They started with a request that employees call a toll free number to let them know they are safe. Now Messages are asking people with ANY information about UA employees to call the number.

We have a CSR who had transfered to MSY in January, she is in PHL now staying with her co-workers. She checked in. Today I gave the number to a F/A who lives in N.O. to check in he was on a trip, but still thought it best to make sure he was accounted for.

Thank you for proving my point.

Getting back to the point of this thread: UA's idea of adding another facet to the relief effort is a good one. UA did a similar Mileage Plus related fundraiser for the Tsunami disaster, it is only smart that they repeat a sucessful funraising drive.

DL is doing something. I've read about thier efforts in another thread. Frankly I think this comparison of different airlines relief aid is ridiculous. This is America, and Companies are not souless monoliths, they are run by people, who see and understand and sympathize with the tremendous scope of this disaster. It doesn't surpise me at all that airlines have VOLUNTEERED thier airplanes and resources, without the need for the government to comandeer them. Watch and see as FEDEx and UPS and Cargo airlines help with planes and trucks, as Home Depot and Lowes and construction companies help out.

Unfortunately, the worst thing that could have happened happened. Communication, was cut off. Without communication the Police failed, without communication, the scope of this disaster was unknown, without communication relief aid was sent too late.

DL brought about 140 people out of MSY to ATL today on DL9900. They have assigned each family a "Care Representative", and are providing food and lodging in ATL for them for the next few days. The plan is to then accomodate them to anywhere in the system where they can be with family/friends to take care of them. These flights will now become daily, and will depart and arrive at the Mercury Air Center. Today's flight was a 757, however starting at 11AM tomorrow all flights will be 767's On board today's flight was DL CEO Gerry Grinstein, who immediately authorized more flights until whenever necessary.

Congrats to all the airlines able to donate whatever they might be able to right now, we all know they are not in the best of times and everything regardless as to how small can help.
