I think this is a wonderful gesture by CO and one that should be considered by any of us who have banked miles.

Press Release:

Continental Airlines Contributes to Hurricane Katrina Relief Effort
Carrier Donates 1,000,000 OnePass Frequent Flyer Miles to Both American Red Cross and AmeriCares; OnePass Members Can Donate Miles Through Continental.com

HOUSTON, Aug. 31 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Continental Airlines (NYSE: CAL) announced that it will put 1,000,000 OnePass miles into both its American Red Cross and AmeriCares mileage donation accounts to support the relief effort in the areas of the southeastern United States impacted by Hurricane Katrina. American Red Cross and AmeriCares provide assistance to areas affected by natural or man-made disasters, and OnePass mileage donations to these groups help meet the travel needs of those working to alleviate the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina.

OnePass members can donate their miles to these agencies at continental.com>Frequent Flyer>Use Miles>Donate Miles.

Continental's OnePass mileage donation accounts allow OnePass members to contribute their OnePass miles to a number of charitable organizations including the American Red Cross, AmeriCares, CAREFORCE, Healing the Children and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. To date, over 85 million miles have been donated to support these organizations by members of Continental's OnePass frequent flyer program.

Continental Airlines is the world's sixth-largest airline. Continental, together with Continental Express and Continental Connection, has more than 3,100 daily departures throughout the Americas, Europe and Asia, serving 148 domestic and 130 international destinations, more than any other carrier in the world. Nearly 400 additional points are served via SkyTeam alliance airlines, which include Aeromexico, Air France/KLM, Alitalia, CSA Czech Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Korean Air and Northwest Airlines. With 41,000 employees, Continental has hubs serving New York, Houston, Cleveland and Guam, and together with Continental Express, carries approximately 56 million passengers per year. Continental consistently earns awards and critical acclaim for both its operation and its corporate culture.

For the second consecutive year, FORTUNE magazine named Continental the No. 1 Most Admired Global Airline on its 2005 list of Most Admired Global Companies. Continental was also included in the publication's annual "Top 50" list, which ranks all companies, across a wide variety of industries, that appear in the Global Most Admired Companies issue. Continental again won major awards at the 2005 OAG Airline of the Year Awards including "Airline of the Year" and "Best Airline Based in North America" for the second consecutive year, and "Best Executive/Business Class" for the third consecutive year. US Airways also donated 5,000,000 miles to the American Red Cross.

I'm the expert on here on two things, neither of which I care about much anymore.

I've e-mailed the Managing Director of the Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan and asked if we can add the American Red Cross to our "Charity Miles" program that's already in place for organizations like the Make-A-Wish foundation and other worthwhile causes.

Hopefully this is something that can get done! Way to go CO and US - even though cash is helpful (and airlines CAN'T afford to give any out), the miles go a long way toward helping keep more cash in the pockets of the charities and relief organizations.  bigthumbsup
