SW Ticket Change Fees

Posted (9 years 1 month 3 weeks 2 days 2 hours ago) and read 2389 times:

I had an outbound Southwest ticket for which I had to change the time. I expected the usual $100.00 fee and pay the difference of fares. Was I ever surprised when there were no fees, and the fare was actually lower so I received a CREDIT for a future flight. I was in shock. I am so use UA and US fees and charges. No wonder people LOVE Southwest!!!!!

He is commenting on how good the change fee for Southwest is. The correction is there IS NO CHANGE FEE. You pay the fare difference if the new price is higher and if the new price is lower, you get credit torwards a future flight like he stated. This is why I try to use Southwest all the time.

Wow, that's good. I'm going to have to pay £60 (over US$100) to change 4 easyJet flights for me and my girlfriend due to unforseen circumstances - and the new flights are cheaper but no refund or credit of the difference. And the LCCs aren't the only ones - Aer Lingus did exactly the same to me a couple of months ago.

Good on Southwest.

No rip-off $100 change fee, no B.S., travel credit is 100% transferable (name changes). And they have made a profit for 30+ years.

Can your airline say that?

Many people choose SWA because of their ticketing policy. People that understand the value of a dollar and are not so self important they need an assigned seat and pre-boarding.

I’ll offer a different view. SWA has a following of passengers (myself included) with a “cult-like” mentality. Rapid Rewards is the most loyal frequent-flyer program in the industry. Some people drive HUNDREDS of miles (myself included) for SWA service. Some know of no other form of domestic air travel. Some small-business owners owe their livelihoods to SWA. If it were not for SWA, we could not get up everyday and do the things we do (at least make $$$ at it).

I actually admire Southwest's generous ticket change policy. I wish more carriers would adopt such a reasonable strategy. It just makes sense.

FlyingTexan is right. While I have flown many other airlines (most US majors, minors and LCCs) anything that is not on WN I have not purchased (it has been company travel). Unless WN cannot get me within 200 miles of my destination I would never book on any other carrier. The reasons for this are two fold: a) Ticket prices and policies (ie no charge on changing a ticket) b) Customer Service that is, by far, the best in the industry.

Here is a real life example. I purchased a ticket from MCO-CMH and return (departing Aug. 28 and returning Sept. 6) on Aug. 18. Total cost after all taxes and fees was $136.97 (direct flights). On Sept. 6, at the airport, about 30 min before the flight was to depart, I received a business call and needed to stay in CMH for a about two months. I went to the ticket counter and WN gave me a credit for $67. I then purchased a ticket for someone else to fly on Oct. 24 MCO-CMH for $70.00. So, not only did I choose not to fly last minute, but WN gave me a full credit for the ticket AND allowed me to transfer my credits to another person, but it didn't cost me a single dime to do all of this.

That is why so many people LUV WN

This probably does pay quite a role in WN being one of the traveller's darlings in the US - that's really extremely customer-friendly.

As a side-note: SW (the code you used in your thread-topic) is the IATA-Code for Air Namibia, which probably explains the relatively few views you got on this thread so far... WN is Southwest, so is SWA.  Wink

Yes it's great they don't charge fees. I think other airlines should lower fees personally. But the thing you have to remember is when airlines are consistently making money they increase benefits to customers, when they are not, they have to charge for extra things. WN is lucky in the fact they have been making money so they can be more lenient with their policies. I bet you anything if they were having financial problems, they would be charging people to change tickets.
