Looks like FL has had their first 737 down in MIA the past couple of days for the winglet mod. So keep an eye out, it should be out soon. I wonder what they are going to put on their winglets. Knowing Airtran it's going to be "airtran.com" or the big ol' "a".

I thought all winglets were put on at BFI?

It is slated to come out of the Avborne hangar in MIA at 1800 local today. We will see if it happens at that time.

N175AT came out of the Avborne hangar on the north side this morning to take out a trip while another aircraft (N168AT) was arriving and then going to the hangar.

Not to shabby looking. I wish that they wouldnt have painted the inside of them blue, but oh well.

I think they look great on both sides. I like the blue insides and it will look good against blue sky while inflight.

Im sorry those 737NG winglets are just TOO high -- they look silly .. as do the ones theyre putting on 757s. This industry is getting just a little too carried away with this winglet theme, i think.

At least they didn't paint the blue on the outside. Most critics of the new livery have stated that the blue cowlings clash somewhat with the rest of the plane's colors.

The airtran.com written on the inside of the winglets (aren't they copying WN just a tad?) along with the existing titles on the engine cowlings means that the .com titles now appear 4 times. Isn't this a bit overkill?

The teal & white 'a' logo on the outside looks cool, although it was done once before:

Side question(s): Wasn't FL's initial reason for not opting for blended winglets on their 73Gs due to gate parking issues at ATL? Has that gate situation changed since last year?

Or did Joe Leonard & company realize that any fuel savings (especially at today's prices) generated from the winglets are worth any gate parking hassles or restrictions at ATL?

It's all about the mighty dollar. They save money. You'd probably buy them too.

Pardon my ignorance on the subject, but with the price of oil the way it is and such, what's the likelihood of just about everyone with a 737NG fleet considering winglets? Especially AA and DL?

They're not there for show or to make the plane look cool, they're there because they provide significant fuel savings.

Which brings me to a question: aren't all these winglet mods essentially an admission by Boeing that they did not design the wing to be as efficient as it could be?

I think you've hit the nail on the head : with fuel costing what it is, it's cheaper to save fuel, then figure out how to fit the planes @ the gates ...

My guess is we'll end up seeing a mixture of gates that can handle either plane, and gates that can only handle the 737 due to the smaller wingspan ...

BTW - referring to the comment about the size of the winglets, just wait 'til you see them in person, from inside a plane looking out over the wing at ANOTHER plane ... the ones on the plane you're actually in don't look all that large from the inside. But the plane next door? They just look enormous!

I think the FL colorscheme looks great ... really gives the winglets a rakedback, FAST look, improves the colorscheme too.

IIRC the CEO was quoted in an issue of Airways stating that the fuel savings didn't justify the cost. Obviously with fuel spiraling he changed his mind.

When we orderded the 737's we only had 24 gates in ATL. Now we are up to 30 gates. In my opinion the 737W's will operated out of the D concourse due to the fact that it is not as congested as C. I could be wrong, but that it my 2 cents.

AFAIK, the gates on C are going to be reconfigured so 737Ws can park at any one of them. This will mean losing two gates but this will be made up with more gates on D. Of course, with the impending Delta bankruptcy, AirTran may get more C-gates after all.  Big grin

I don't think Delta will ever give up any ATL gates unless it was a ch. 7 situation. UAL did the same thing here in DEN. United is far from fully utilizing their DEN gates, but would rather sit on them than have Frontier take any. Looks like the recent service cuts have been at CVG and DFW with additions at ATL.

Yeah, I just noticed that. It's happened to me before; I shade, hit quote, edit, and post, and the forum software gets the reply # wrong. Dunno why ...

Maybe too many fingers all hitting "POST" at once ....

I believe that the Elton John decals have since been stripped off the 717s that once had them.

Humm....I wonder if CVG could become another hub for FL they way it did for DL? We have needed some discount service there for a long time. With DL giving up the flights, I wonder if it would be a good thing for FL to try and get a couple of gates????

Not a bad idea. I wonder if it would take some passengers away from Dayton though?

This is what happens when you highlight text and then click the "quote" button under the post, instead of the one above the post.

That, or a post was deleted. The rest of the posts get renumbered, but the quoted text doesn't get renumbered.
