TAM Leads In 35 Brazilian Airports

July/05 data show that TAM is the leader in 75% of the airports in which it operates in Brazil (i.e. the leader in 35 airports). TAM has a market share of 44% of the Brazilian domestic market.

Of the major Brazilian airports, TAM is not the leader in GRU, POA, MAO, and FLN, all of which TAM is no. 2. TAM is no. 3 in GIG (after RG and G3).

TAM's most important airports in Brazil (total pax traffic) are, in order:
CGH, BSB, SDU, CNF, SSA, CWB, FOR, REC, VIX and GYN.

On 1 September/05 TAM received another A320 which makes its fleet size 75 aircraft (2nd biggest airline in Latin America, after RG).

Until the end of the year TAM will receive another A320 (+ 4 in 2006)and one A330 (+ 3 in 2006). TAM is the biggest operator of Airbuses in Latin America. All of TAM's F100 will be phased out by 2007/08.

What a surprise JJ ahead of RG on Northeast. In fact RG keeps ahead only on their hubs (GRU and GIG) and hometown POA (?) (while G3 is growing a lot on POA)

Also, we see a good fight JJ x G3 on CWB with a little difference.

And Gol is doing a very good job, second is most of the airports (due to high operations of RG on GIG and GRU). A very smart network as they have around half of the planes JJ uses on their domestic network. Seems that Gol also keeps 1st place on FLS !

Indeed, even in RG's traditional NE Brazil markets such as SSA or NAT or JPA; TAM is dominant in almost all destinations in NE Brazil.

A market which TAM still has to crack is South Brazil, another traditional RG territory, the main one is no doubt POA, RG hometown! However, TAM is making important inroads in the South, e.g. FLN and IGU. IGU is another strongold of RG. And as you mentioned, the fight is big in CWB between G3 and JJ!

Other places in the South where the battle is strong is NVT and JOI (G3 operates 4/5 daily flights from each and will soon become no. 1 overtaking RG).
LDC, MGF and CXP are fairly distributed between JJ, RG and G3 (each with 1/2 daily flights). The only Southern market which RG currently dominates 100% is XAP, which does not mean much!

Indeed, a changing landscape in the Brazilian aviation....

Good to see such developments Hardi. It means that even JJ in their main hub (CGH) will face in the near future strong competition for several destinations where Gol and Varig keep strong like NAV, JOI, FLS, LDC, MGF.

Important that Gol nowadays use CWB in a smart way as a Parana state hub (while RG and JJ uses CGH) in the early night handle some flights to Maringa, Foz and Londrina. That's why Gol is doing so good in CWB (people there realize that this investment is great for them, more than receiving flights from Sao Paulo). I imagine that one day Gol could do the same at FLS (connecting the capital to NAV, JOI and may be in the future XAP).

And Ocean Air, WebJet and the new comers can drive some interesting changes on this frame.

Interesting: TAM has as its main hubs CGH and BSB, while RG just stated that it will focus on GRU and GIG.

What are GOL's main hubs? CWB, CGH or GIG?

GOL's recently announced routes POA-EZE and FLN-EZE also show that the airline will make important inroads in RG's traditional POA market.

One reason why JJ has not become the nr 1 carrier in South Brazil is because RG still offers better (read more discount) corporate agreements which pretty much makes up their traffic on these routes.

Also, they have long standing business ties with some of Brazil's largest corporate travel agencies (i.e. BTI, Accor, etc) which guarantees a good sales volume on some of their main routes.
