There is, of course, a significant number of services from VIE to Eastern Europe. Destinations include: PRG; WAW; KRK; LJU; ZAG; SPU; DBV; SJJ; BEG; TIA; SKP; SOF; VAR; IEV; KIV; OTP; ODS; Lvov; TSR; Cluj-; MSQ; RIX; and VNO. If you include Russia, you can add MOW and LED. Some might also include BAK, EVN and TBS. Now, could anyone giving me a full list of Eastern Europe destinations from VIE including, if possible, the frequencies and aircraft types? I'd be very grateful. Thanks.

Well check OS's timetable for starters. They have pretty much the biggest network (alongside LH) of East Euro destinations of any Western euro carrier. I suspect they wil serve every one of their destinations in the region from VIE.

I would like to see increased competition for OS with other Eastern European carriers moving in and offering services ex VIE. I think Austrian has become somewhat compacent about this market and its constant cuts to service levels in recent years would leave an alternative airline offering decent timings, fares and a better, full-service on board product at a distinct advantage.

I think the major problem oif VIE are the outrageous taxes they charge. I'm flying to MEX next week with IB, sweet deal of 357 EUR fare and nightmare of another nearly 190 EUR on taxes, huge chunk of it being VIE departure tax I suspect. Unfortunately this fare is not offered out of PRG since IB's service PRG-MAD & PRG-BCN is only a c/s on OK hardware.
BTW, most of the E. European destinations are served out of PRG as well (and cheaper), with some extras such as TLL, KUF, SVX, EVN, etc.

Airlines normally hide their fuel surcharge in the tax/fee part. Be aware of that! Vienna airport is indeed one of the most expensive places in worldwide, but the currently high amounts of additional costs are mainly caused by the airlines.

I am well aware of the fact that airlines try to keep the fares optically low by moving portion of the fare under fees for this and surcharge for that, etc. but this doesn't change the fact that VIE is ranked among the most expensive apts. in Europe.

Quoting BAxMAN (Reply 21): There is so much more to air travel than the bloody catering.
I absolutely agree with you. For example, on BEG-VIE-BEG sector, I would have chosen OS daily flights on A319, simply to enjoy flying on jet airliner (I'm not a fan of either Dash 8s or ATR-72) and wouldn't give a damn if OS won't provide any food on board.

Fair enough, but its another thing completley for Austrian to take for granted its position as the favoured airline for Eastern Europe. Its recent changes to service levels smacks of complacency and arrogance, particualrly as many of the Eastern European airlines provide a high quality service with complimentary food and drink even on relativley short sectors.
