MIA is becoming a heaven for DC-10s.

I was taking some good old slides at MIA some 10 days ago and was pleasantly surprised by 10 different DC-10s (South Wind Cargo N140WE, Arrow N524MD and N526MD (in all white colors) and N478CT, and especially Cielos Cargo N305FE, N322FE, N833LA and OB-1749, Centurion N612GC and Gemini N602GC.

Above all I was pleased by Cielos, as I did not expect MIA to be so well visited by them and I must say, nothing is better than being overwhelmed by some unexpected 3-holers:

According to their webpage their base is MIA rather than LIM (at least there are many more flights leaving Florida's biggest airport than Peru's). Is it just me who is surprised how big they have grown? I just think this is an airline that is somehow not talked about enough even though they have now one of the biggest DC-10 fleets worldwide (7 Dc-10Fs).

So what makes them so unknown ? Any help to solve this mysterious riddle?

Thank you for your comments,

cheers y saludos

HBIHL

All I know about Cielos is the 757 on the basic MS FS programme is a Cielos 757. Not sure if they ever had any, I thought it was a made-up airline at the time (late 90s). Then I saw a few DC10s (or an MD11?) and found out they really existed.

Well, another try: is it still a Peruvian company or has it become predominantly American?

What makes them so successful?

they are also present in europe as they have block space agrements on cargolux flights from lux to vcp and cwb....(brazil)....

it would be great if Cielos would open a mia-europe-mia flight to conect to all latinamerican destinations......

the former name was Cielos del Peru....

as I know they are tranporting mainly flowers, asparagus and other perishables northbound to the us, and industrial goods and consumer products down to Latin-America...

Think Challenge Air Cargo and you will have your answer  Wink

Possibly why a B757 appeared in FS!

I was pleasantly surprised to see N831LA at LAX on 9/3. It was a DC-10.

..and all of their DC-10s are named "PETETE"

Cielos had their own aircraft at least since 1998. I know they had 1 or 2 B707 freighters in full colors then. The first DC-10s first appeared at Miami in 2002. I believe they're somehow related to Argentinan airline STAF, which had an almost identical livery. STAF flew to Miami with a DC-10 during the 1990s and then leased an MD11 for a year or so but then stopped flying to Miami around 2001. I dont think STAF are flying any planes anymore. Cielos seem to have taken over for them and become much bigger than STAF ever were.

So Centurion/Challenge owns this company?

I dont get the Challenge example. That was an American company that flew mostly to Latin America. IT's been renamed Centurion and only fly DC10s too but they're still American. Cielos was supposedly Peruvian but is it now American? (since the Peru part of the name was dropped)

Ok, maybe I'm confused...nothing new there!

My apologies it is Centurion who are related to Challenge not Cielos!

Cielos seem to have MIA as there main hub, but they do fly between LAX and South America.
