Swiss french television as opened a new website with lots of archives and one of them is about the SR's inaugural flight to Tokyo with the Coronado.
On board, authorization to smoke, champagne in flutes out of glass... Great class !

Click on the link below and chose "Vol Swissair"

Thanx. Cool. I remember my first flight when I was a boy. It was with a Swissair Convair 990 Coronado from Zurich to Athens. She stays in my mind as an absolute outstanding aircraft with plenty of room in economy class (as it was in these days, 1972).

Thank you for the great video. I flew the SR Coronado from TLV to Zurich. Even economy class was classy then.

Sadly one crashed due to a bomb on board in the 60s.

It was a lot more fun to fly in those days, especially on Swissair my favourite airline until the 1990s, when it started going downhill.

I still remember their DC-6 (my first SR flight) and Convair 440 / Metropolitans. They used to really spoil kids in those days.

That's great, because I was working for Swissair in 1965, and still this flight was operating.

Old times, but nice ones!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No security, no paranoia, and so on....

Cheers. Kilavoud.

So you guys had the opportunity to fly an Convair 990 !? That's what I call luck (  old  )  Wink

Anyway, I've meet an old SR pilot last year and I asked him if he flew the Coronado to what he replied by "Oh Yes!" with something like "how do you know this aircraft you little boy ?" in his eyes (He didn't knew I was an aviation fan). We chatted for a while and he explained how marvelous the Coronado was, I felt he had great feelings with this special aircraft.

I am not sure, but I heard once that she was one of the fastest airliners ever (of course not counting the Concorde).

Wow! Did I see a martini shaker, or am I dreaming?
SR was a great airline until the mid 90s...I remember flying with them as a boy in the 80s, and having things like pate de foie gras or Buedenerfleisch in economy class! I loved flying transatlantic on their DC-10s...excellent legroom, good food, good service, and a magnificent aircraft (in spite of its reputation, the DC-10 has always been one of my favorites).
Now I'm all nostalgic, and I wasn't even alive when this clip was filmed!

It was popular with pax and crew, but was a real gas guzzler.

Hi!

Well I was extremely pleased to see that handsome Swissair CV990 flying and the inside filming also amazing!!! Just to inform that the plane was HB-ICA ( look at the shot of the nose and you'll see an "A" there!!!
Here goes a shot of that same airplane!

DC-10s...excellent legroom

Oh yes. And Swissair had till the beginning of the 1980ies (don't recall perhaps till 1983 or 1984) only EIGTH seats abreast in their DC 10s in economy class! Afterwards nine like all other airlines but the best solution for it: 2-4-3.

I remember this arrangement on the MD-11s years later, but I clearly remember 2-5-2 on the DC-10s (after 1984, as you mention). I was stuck in the dreaded middle seat on more than one occasion.

I believe at one time their B747s had 1 seat less in Y than the others; 9 instead of 10.
