A little more info!

Berlin's Tegel airport was temporarily closed on Wednesday to allow the controlled explosion of a 1,000-pound (454 kg) U.S. World War Two bomb unearthed during construction work, police said.

Takeoffs and landings at the airport, one of Germany's busiest, were suspended for about an hour, an adjacent highway was closed, trains on a nearby subway line were halted and local people evacuated from the area, police said.

Add to the general scenario "closed motorways" and you´ll get a picture of what is quite common in a lot of Germany´s urbanized areas. The only real problem will be if a bomb cannot be defused, but will have to be either transported "un-defused" (or what´s the right word ?) to a nearby open space (to carry out the detonation there) or has to be blown up in its current position. Fortunately this happens not too often.
BTW: My deepest respect to those bomb squads ! The beasts they are dealing with were manufactured 60 years ago and have been buried under (usualy a bit wet) soil for 6 deacdes !
