JT8D Engines

Is the PW6000 engine a direct replacement for the JT8D-219 engines? The reason I ask is the PW6000 diameter is only a smidge bigger than the JT8D-200 series engines, and could probably be mounted on an MD-80... Although if AA were to re-engine their MD-80s, they'd probably go for the BR700 series (either the 710 or 715-C1-30)
