Indonesia's Garuda signs $2 bln deal with Boeing

JAKARTA, Sept 16 (Reuters) - Indonesian state airline Garuda Indonesia has signed a $2 billion deal with Boeing Co. (BA.N: Quote, Profile, Research) to buy 28 passenger aircraft, the local carrier said on Friday.
The airline said in a statement it would buy 18 narrow body 737-800s and 10 787-800s, with the first delivery of the 737s by next year. Garuda said the deal was signed on Sept. 15 in New York, and witnessed by visiting Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

They still show outstanding.

Since the 777s were ordered in 1996 and the 737s in 1999, one would think that this would replace those orders.

I read a story about this on Yahoo news where they said that the eighteen 738 will replace Garuda's current four 734. Is this correct? If so, this is what I really call a mega-replacement!

This deal had been in the making since April of this year, when a high level Boeing delegation visited Garuda's headquarters in Jakarta. B738s had long been in the picture, and B788s have been added at that point in time. Details of the deal have been further worked out over the past couple of months, for a signing to coincide with Indonesia's President's visit to the US earlier this year, but as an agreement was not reached, the signing was postponed until the President's current US visit for the UN General Assembly.

As for the details of the agreement, the first batch of B738s will arrive next year and gradually replace 5 leased B733s (PK-GGS/T/U/V/W) to start with. Later B738 deliveries are designed for growth and will allow Garuda to increase its regional offerings.

As for the longhaul component of this deal, it was expected that further information on the B772ER order combined with information on the future of the B744s at Garuda would be released at the same time. Either this information has not yet come through, or there have been last minute changes, but it looks as if the B772ER still has a future with Garuda whereas the B744s will likely be phased out. It seems also more and more unlikely that we'll see additional A333s joining Garuda's fleet.

Don't hold your breath on that one. A return to Europe is definitely in the cards, but Amsterdam and London are topping the list. Frankfurt, Paris and Zurich are considered second priority.

JAKARTA -(Dow Jones)- Indonesia's flag carrier PT Garuda Indonesia and U.S. aircraft manufacturer Boeing Co. (BA) (BA) signed a $2 billion deal Thursday to modernize the company's fleet, Garuda said in a statement Friday.

Under the deal, Garuda will operate 18 Boeing (BA) 737-800s by 2006 to replace its five 737-400s. It will also operate 10 Boeing (BA) 787 Dreamliners by 2013, the statement said.

Garuda said the move to operate the Dreamliner is in line with the company's aim to modernize its fleet to make it more competitive and cost-efficient.

The statement said the Dreamliner will use 20% less fuel than today's comparable aircraft, while providing up to 45% more cargo revenue capacity.

The 787 family will carry passengers on routes between 3,500 and 8,500 nautical miles (6,500 to 16,000 kilometers), Garuda said, without elaborating.

Boeing (BA) plans to debut the Dreamliner with a maiden flight scheduled for 2007, with certification, delivery and entry into service in 2008.

The carrier currently operates 57 Boeing (BA) aircraft of various models.

Well...I'm not going to argue...but there's at least one news report this morning quoting Garuda as saying the 777s (which it has already tried to swap-out once) are probably being dumped this time.

I am extremely relieved that the original order of 777 and 73Gs have finally got a boost in the arm with this... even if this deal replaces it, this is more believable than former CEO Indra Setiawan's rants to the press about getting more 737s and eventually NGs...

This is probably another GECAS deal... GA looks hard pressed to meet the commitments to the ECA for the 6 A330s and the 3 on option... All that money pumped into the A330 payments and the maintenance program is good... but unlikely that GA wanna get more of them unless there's significant FURTHER improvements to its bottom line.

HB-IWC, where will the 5 733s go? *Not Citilink I hope*... let me know... I am "very curious"  Smile

As HB-IWC said, looks like a formal statement by GA on the overall deferred/outstanding orders situation is due soon.

As to the return to Europe, it'll definitely be LGW and AMS as the first destinations... FRA would probably be a stop to LGW... as for anything else, the 2nd tier haven't really changed much...
FRA leading the 2nd tier, CDG and ZRH...

Then it's FCO, but MAD is unfortunately below that and "quite far down the list"... according to the pre2002 long term plans... (thanks Ro-Djo).

Originally the 777s were slated for Europe routes, but with the 787s in the picture and the DC10 and 742s all but flying in GIA, I guess that plan is up the creek too!

I expect major route-aircraft changes to the current arrangements.

This will basically either:
1. Kill the A333 off GA's fleet and the 744...
2. Kill the 772ER off GA's fleet and the 744...

Taking a banker's approach into this, it looks like the 787 will replace the 772ER order (how else will it be financed this quick into the current turnaround?)... If it's really 16,000km, then it's CGK/DPS-Europe direct... Looks like the A333 will be relegated to "people mover" duties... doing the M-E routes, DPS-Aussie routes and the North Asia/Japan routes could start receiving the 787s... to better suit the aircraft config with the route (honestly, an A330 with 42 C class to Adelaide won't fill up, and a 744 with less than 30 C class seats to NRT won't reap you the dividends the 744 should give you...).

At least this confirms that GA still has the brains and power to put Lion's PR down from the top spot in the Indonesian Airlines' PR charts  Smile

But 787s in at 2013? Well, the NGs may cover the regional A330 routes like HKG and CAN for the moment...
