Forget the "superjumbos" for a while. The "minijumbos" will be the heavy airliner manufacturer's bread and butter in the years to come. Here's an article concerning what is, in my opinion, the best of the best of our current airliners.

Five years after its debut, United Airlines is putting jets to good use in Denver

When the first Boeing 777 arrived five years ago, it was built to take off in the challenging atmosphere of mile-high Denver fully loaded and bound for Hawaii on a hot summer day.

United Airlines, the launch customer for the wide-body jet, demanded that kind of performance before it would agree to buy the plane, Boeing spokesman Sean Griffin said.

While United is not actually using the jet on that 3,000-mile route, the world's largest airline has made extensive use of its 41 Boeing 777s in Denver.

"It's been extremely popular with our customers," said United spokesman Joe Hopkins. "For several years, we were the only U.S. carrier to have them in our fleet."

Hard-pressed by Europe's Airbus Industrie in the market for single-aisle, narrow-bodied planes, Boeing will tout the supremacy of the 777 on the plane's five-year anniversary next week.

No competing Airbus, Griffin says, can fly the Denver-to-Honolulu route fully loaded when temperatures top 68 degrees in Denver.

Because of Denver's altitude, large jets are unable to take off on hot days if they are fully loaded with passengers, cargo and fuel for a transoceanic journey.

When British Airways began flying from Denver to London in 1998, the airline bought a 777 to handle the route.

With extended-range engines from General Electric, the 777 can fly from Denver to Frankfurt, Germany, Griffin says. That range of more than 5,000 miles from Denver is a bone of contention between the city of Denver and United.

United says it does not have an airplane that will fly from Denver to Frankfurt on a hot day. Denver Mayor Wellington Webb suggests takeoffs in the morning or evening when the temperature is cooler. But United responds that there are other issues to consider, such as practical connecting flights in Denver and Frankfurt.

At the least, United is considering seasonal flights between the two cities, Regional Vice President Roger Gibson said.

The issue could become moot by 2003, when Boeing launches a 777 that will be able to fly 10,000 miles.

Meanwhile, the 777 has won rave reviews from pilots, passengers, mechanics and ground crews. Gordon McKinzie, manager of new-aircraft development for United, called the 777 "the current benchmark against which all other commercial transports are measured" in a five-year report card for Boeing.

With the widest seats in the industry, the 777 is the most requested airplane by travelers, McKinzie wrote.

On May 19th I flew on a RR Trent 800 powered Delta 777-200 from MCO to ATL. This aircraft was terrific! The engines were very quiet and powerful with 92,000lbs thrust from each of it's two engines. That plane went like a rocket down the runway when the pilot shoved the throttles forward and quickly lifted off reaching it's cruising altitude of 33,000ft in 10 minutes.

I flew LHR-SFO 10 hours stuck on a B777 (Awfull) and it was UA (awfull) has to be the worst flight of my life. Its B747`S, DC10`S, MD11`S for me next time. I know people will disagree but its my opinon. USA are good inturnally

What's your opinion on the 777-100X and 767-400ERX? Won't these two models compete with each other (in terms of pax)...rumor is that ILFC and NW are interested in the -100, while the -400ER has a LoI from Kenya Airways. I don't think Boeing can afford to launch both...

Actually, there's one part wrong about all this, the 747 is still the most requested plane of Business men/women.

I have not read anything comparing the 767-400ERX and the 777-100 models at all, so I can't speak to that. I would have to assume that, while the number of passengers would be similar, the range of each model would be different. I will have to do some digging around, maybe tomorrow, in the library to see if I can find anything.

Top story: GE/P&W eyes Boeing exclusivity

General Electric and Pratt & Whitney's Engine Alliance is considering bidding to be exclusive engine supplier with the GP7000 to the proposed Boeing 747X and 767-400ERX, in a complex move that could threaten a launch decision on Boeing's 777-100X. Meanwhile, Boeing continues to target a number of key customers for the 777 variant.
The controversial move could depend on the outcome of studies by GE, which was favourite to power the longer range 767-400ERX version with a hybrid "G2" version of its CF6-80C2. The engine maker is "not convinced" the CF6 growth model is the best engine for the -400ERX, and says the GP7000 is being considered for the twin.
Before the study can progress, however, the Alliance partners need the sanction of the European Union, which approved the formation of the partnership with the proviso that GP7000 engines be used on proposed quad jet designs such as the 747X and Airbus A3XX.
"No-one has gone off to study that yet," says the Alliance, which declines to comment on a potential bid to seek exclusivity on the -400ERX and the 747X. GE adds, however, that rumours of a proposed bid for exclusivity on the 747X are "not true". Nonetheless, the limited market scope of the -400ERX, added to the battle for market share on the 747X with the A3XX, is likely to make the case for exclusivity particularly attractive.
Boeing has announced plans to develop the higher weight "enhanced" 767-400ER, thanks to interest from Kenya Airways. Boeing admits this is "for all intents and purposes" the -400ERX, but has subsequently pushed the project back into Product Development as it wrestles with the choice of engines for the aircraft.
The move threatens to derail the proposed 777-100X "shrink" variant, which is being pitched at International Lease Finance (ILFC), Northwest Airlines and Singapore Airlines as an alternative to the A330-200 and, to a lesser extent, the European consortium's proposed A330-100X. Northwest's interest in the 777-100X is as a possible replacement for its 21 McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30s and 21 DC-10-40s. Northwest is the only one of the four largest US carriers not to order the 777.
Information obtained by Flight International reveals Boeing has provisionally planned flight tests of the 777-100X and 767-400ERX between August and December 2003, but is unlikely to carry out both as the aircraft effectively compete for the same market.
The GP Alliance bid, if adopted, would help secure the launch of the -400ERX, but could damage the chances of launching the -100X which, as a 9.5 frame shrink, is considered marginal in terms of seat/kilometre costs.
Ron Ostrowski, vice-president and general manager 777 programme, says: "There are staunch proponents of the 767 and some that love the 777. We are getting interest for both versions. We have made no commitments, but we probably will soon."
Boeing is studying 12,200km (6,600nm), 13,320km and 14,800km range versions, and is reportedly gravitating towards the mid-range variant. If launched, the -100X is widely expected to enter major assembly in April 2003, and make its first flight in August.

Last August, I flew in a Delta 777 in Business elite from London to Atlanta. It was a wonderful flight. The 777 is certainly my favorite plane.
